Ego Likeness Breedless

Our old school DC friends Ego Likeness have extended their tour in support of their recent album Breedless and if you haven’t had a chance to catch them live, you really should rectify that.

I really like this album a lot. Donna Lynch has a beautiful haunting and powerful voice that sounds so good poured over the programming and guitar work of Steve Archer. Their collaboration hits that sweet spot of accessible Electro Industrial, strong, rhythmic, but still meaningful and emotional. It’s just the kind of stirring dark electronic music I enjoy, in the school of Collide and Faith & the Muse but equally comfortable on stage with the likes of Combichrist or Angelspit.

Ego Likeness - Breedless

I guess we’re coming up on a pretty big birthday for Blue Blood and birthdays tend to make me a little reflective of the past. I was just thinking about the fact that Steve Archer’s hand drawn artwork illustrated the cover of the very first issue of B.L.T. (Black Leather Times) that I ever had handed to me in a dark underground industrial club in DC. Mohawk Adam was spinning and the girl that handed me the zine was Amelia G. I’ve worked with her on one project or another ever since, and Steve Archer was always an artistic fixture in the punk rock group house she convinced me to move into. I really should put that issue online sometime. It’s a little earlier than the ones we have up there now.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate about the DC punk-industrial-gothic scene is that it’s always seemed to resist the cultural purist cliqueification you find in so many other areas. Ego Likeness taps into that same sensibility, fusing their sound with an alchemy of stylistic influences that give them the range to explore different tempos and arrangements while still maintaining the integrity of their core sound.
