The Nuns Jennifer Miro: An Appreciation By Jack Boulware

Jack Boulware, the author of Gimme Something Better: The Profound, Progressive, and Occasionally Pointless History of Bay Area Punk from Dead Kennedys to Green Day, wrote a nice remembrance of Jennifer. It is nice to see that the SF Weekly also felt like the SF Weekly hadn’t quite given her what they should and rectified the situation. His description of Jennifer is a much more accurate one and he goes into some of the interesting areas of her background and achievements. One of my favorite quotes from Jennifer in the article is:

“To me The Nuns were really a cool band. We never sold out, we never made it big, we never became a big commercial thing. But so what? A lot of people don’t make it in showbiz. I’ve been basically in and around showbiz people since then, and none of them make it either, so it’s not just us. Showbiz is very, very cutthroat, very competitive. The weird thing is, I keep thinking it’s going to end. But I’m still doing The Nuns. I’m still doing it. . . . Don’t ever, ever get into a band! Do something else with your life. Be a lawyer, be a waitress — anything. I would have been much better off if I had just gone to Vassar and married some investment banker.”

Spoken like someone who was supposed to do one thing, but lived the adventure instead, poignant with insight and humor. Read the whole article on the SF Weekly site.
