Default What is the best and safest way to dye hair?

    I was thinking Kool-Aide(sp)

    Or

another type of method might be juiced up fruit or vegetables
(Juiced Carrots make great red/orange hair dye)

Are there better types, including or aside from the commercial brands?

I would consider doing that just to meet her! But what would be a safe, and cost effective way?

I plan to try that Blue Kool-Aid packet that I got recently...

So I tried the Kool-Aid Method...that method does not work too well, and makes quite a mess.

Totally. She's wickedly great at that.

I say try the spray paint method like what bald men do...just don't go swimming or in the rain.

Well, the thing with Kool Aid is that it doesn't have any preservatives or chemicals to lock the colour into the cuticle.

I would say go with a commercial brand such as Special Effects or Raw. Those dye's have a natural sorce of colour for their base. However, all checmicals aren't bad for you.

Everytime you wash your hair, you wash a chemical into it to make it clean and soft. The same as putting a dye over your hair, it seals your cuticle and makes it shiny and protects it.

You really only start to damage your hair when you lighten it. If you have dark hair, lighten in stages. If you have light hair you should only have to lighten it once and it's prepared for the colour.

Always put a semi-perm colour on wet or damp hair. If it's resistant, try puting salt into to the dye, it attaches the colour to the cuticle while the water breaks the salt down in your hair. And the very last thing you do is put heat on it, blow dry that shit until it's dry and crispy. but... ONLY DO THAT WITH SEMI-PERMANENT COLOURS! Do not do that with colours that call for developers or contain metallics.

Kool Aid is a waste of your time.

    Good tips, Szandora!

I'm gonna try the salt thing.

I re-bleached my roots this weekend (2 scalp crushing sessions) in preperation for my Special Effects brand CupCake Pink dye.
    (I *heart* SPecial Effects)

But I decided to have a little fun with blue tips before doing all the pink next weekend:

I love this pic! I really like your hair in this one. Pretty talented not to have any hair schooling and esspecially for a boy.

Yea. The salt thing usually works. If you ever have any hair/make up questions you can always ask me, I'll probably know the answer. =)

I love the Special Effects too. I used the Iguanna Green for years. Your hair looks really cool like that, with the soft pink and blue tips though. I kinda need to find some new cool styling products though. I like the KMS wax I use, but it got a little weird in the Phoenix heat and kinda falls in hot clubs too.

In D.C. we had a friend that put his hawk up with Krylon. Sometimes I miss those days, sometimes I don't, haha.

I don't think I'm ready for Krylon. That is hardcore. (Which is the point, I guess.)

I use a product called "ice" that I love. Its pretty strong stuff.

I really like the effect you have going on there. Took me a while to notice the blue, I like how it acts as an accent. It's those little details that make the whole thing work. I colors flow into one another very well.

Again you take something I didn't think would work on a guy and pull it off brilliantly. I dunno how you do it...but it's very cool.

I love my hair being red, but it never stays for very long, does anyone have any tips on how to keep the color in longer?

I gave up and started useing regular permanent color after. But that fades pretty fast for permanent as well. I dunno maybe it's the shampoos I have used and stuff.

Well, reds usually fade fast because they usually are made with a blue base and that's the smallest colour particle. The lighter you lighten you hair the less pigment it has, the faster the colour fades because it doesn't have any pigment to attach it's self to.
*It's always important to not over lighten your hair for red.

If you are using a perm-colour I would suggest getting a colour depositing shampoo - I recommend Artec - Red Clover. It deposits colour instead of stripping it. You have rotate between shampoos though. It deposits colour so it can cause build up if you use it too many times in a row, so make sure you switch up between that and regular shampoo. They also cary a moisturizer in the same colour.

You can get it here for pretty cheap. http://www.adiscountbeauty.com/page388.html

*Remember that conditioner makes colour slip out of your hair faster, so don't over condition your hair.

You really should have your own "Hair tip of the day" segment on the site or something.

Thank you Szandora, and I agree you should have your own Hair tip of the day segment.

Hmmm... interesting. Could be fun.. Maybe not a daily tip, but weekly.

I do Make up too... So, I could probably throw some of that in too.
