Thread: Cyberpunk 'shoot (Pics)

  1. #1

    Default Cyberpunk 'shoot (Pics)

Yeah, another one =). I like this genre/style... it's everything that's good about steampunk, without the tech level limitations and all that horrible brown. Everything that something called cybergoth should have been - without meaning insult to what currently bears that label, which is pretty but not particularly dark.

We got kicked out of the area we were shooting in by a security guy halfway through - you get that sometimes when you ignore fences, I guess - so we may do some more in this outfit on another location later. These are cool, but I don't feel the potential of the theme has been fully exploited. Not decided yet.

Neat look but I fail to see the Steampunk connection.

Cyberpunk and steampunk are both fictional genres/settings focused around marginalized, individualistic protagonists dealing with varyingly dystopian societies shaped by certain technologies. The only difference between the genres is the technological era; a futuristic cybernetic/digital focus for cyberpunk vs the retro steam and clockwork of steampunk.

Yes, Raza, I am familiar with the terminology for both genres.

I'm saying, I don't see the Steampunk influence in these pics. Women in the Victorian era wore much more than this model does.

They're nice pics, and she's a cute model. I just don't see the "steam".

I'm not ragging on you, I am trying to figure out what you mean. "Everything good about steampunk" - people are usually in to that for the whole retro-costuming and the over-ornament, as opposed to the stripped-down and techno look you have here.

  22. #13

    Default Re: Cyberpunk 'shoot (Pics)

I didn't say they were steampunk influenced, exactly. I said this genre in its own right captured what I liked about that, while leaving behind what I didn't.

I like the mechanical themes and hardware-heavy ornamentation. I dislike the conservative looking victorian clothing and all the shades of brown.

What did you like about steampunk that you think you captured in this image?

I'm not calling you full of shit or anything, I'm curious as to what you brought from that.

I couldn't agree with you more, cyberpunk is definitely more appealing to me. Brown just repels me in every way. And I can only handle Victorian styling in small doses.

As for the photos, they're gorgeous! I'm loving that collar and belt. Really well done.

I was once told by a CyberGoth that their "genre" took influence from Mad Max and BladeRunner, then he cited the world of Judge Dredd (the comic book character, not the film) as a prime example why they wore goggles and glowsticks. The fact that the Glowstick waving inspiration of the Mega City population and the Goggle wearing inspiration of the Cursed Earth population were separated by a huge fecking wall for a reason seemed to have escaped him.

I like the CyberPunk look, i just hate the way that CyberGoths in my country seem to think that their way is the only way...

The happy glowy ravy stuff and the dystopian or post-apocalyptic influences are a bit of an odd combination, but they do have the futuristic element in common... most people just want to have fun and look pretty and don't think about it so much. I try not to look down on that too much.

F'you got a different idea, I say make it happen and show them why it's cool. I've heard cybers voice prejudices like this, but I've never had one object to our interpretation while we were wearing it.

Thanks! We do the crafting together, but only for our own projects at this time. I enjoy it entirely too much to do it for anything but fun.

Hmm, true, especially that last one. I've learned a lot about making good use of your dynamic range since this set; maybe I'll revisit it and see if I can't do anything about that now.

No catalog; neither the photos nor the clothes are in any way commercial. It's all just for the pleasure of seeing our imagination take form IRL.

i half wish it was for some commercial venture, as i want a good number of the pieces that you both create and wear. plus, i would like either an Itza clone or doll.

I'm flattered, but why settle for pieces of someone else's world? Two thirds of the fun is in building your own.

'Finished reworking one of these, and I think it's a real improvement. What I did to this set the first time worked for the darker set before it, but not for this one.

it makes me see details from one edge of the shot to the other........and, I like to see things rust

Me too, that's why we chose that thing as a background. =)

I tend to work from the assumption that having more nice things to look at is a good thing, so long as the whole remains coherent. I like visuals where your eyes can float from one thing to the next without running out of things to look at for some time. I guess there are potential benefits to selective focus, but this always struck me as optional, a style thing... maybe not entirely. Judging from the two of you, people may find a focus and more or less stick to it, even if we don't chose it for them.

Personally, I like the hair/face part best about the new version. Recovering all the black-on-black detail in her dreads without making them look greyish is always a big challenge.

raza, your's and Itza's sense of aesthetics are similar enough, in many ways, to my own that it feels like at least a partially shared world. i may be wrong; and it maybe only a one-way thing.

Redid another one, and processed a previous take out for practise. I'm loving these last few tricks I learned in photoshop; everything looks so threedimensional and substantial, and the shades of black really come out... that's probably mostly me vainly hyperfocusing on the latest detail, though.

Not really expecting the lot of you to care about all these re-uploads, but I'd like to keep this thread complete and up-to-date.

Fair enough. It was a silly thing for me to ask, perhaps; we all use pieces of the rest of the world to build ourselves with.
