Used to goth everyday. I have too many interests and convictions to maintain any style tho. I've always been a bit of a symbolist. I like to throw memes out into the society. Get people to challenge their assumptions. I wear a lot of black, but I always add an anomaly. This gets people asking "why are you wearing so much orange?" I thus get a soap box for things that matter to me. People are less "herd" like than we often assume. They are, however, very visual. You get a few more people wearing orange and knowing why they do.

I do not look at people and say wow they are goth..I do not judge by clothes or hair or piercings...i know several people who dress *trendy* and have nothing to do with the goth lifestyle/music/perspectives. Yes some people take the darkness they have inside and express it outwardly...others cannot/do not for various reasons...ie work, culture, money, conformity etc.

To me Gothic is what lies inside....to know darkness is beauty...it is in all of us...this does not mean we cannot smile and be happy...that we must be depressed and cut ourselves for attention...this simply means we appreciate the darker things in life..the narrow path....dark romantism...dark architecture..poetry...music...passion..expression ..possibly the unexplainable...we are not like the masses...we do not think along the lines of the crowds..maybe we are a bit different...thats fine...

just please remember not to judge others by how they look...not all *goths* have to look the part...and many dont...

Oh yes, forgot the fetish... Lately, I have been trying out a new style idea, it is sort of 1920's silent film star goth, Midsummer Night's Dream-Meets New Orleans Marti Gra-Opiate Dream Goth... Lot's of jewelled veils and crowns....

But I think it is still goth... I could be wrong...

I answered. I have no real insight into Johnny, tho. He showed up in town a few times. Was rejected for Black Flag. Has made a great actor of himself.

Johnny was definitely a punk rocker. He was in a punk band in Hollywood when some agent literally saw his amazing look/face. I think he is whatever he wants to be.

i know theres alot of conflict in this thread on wether or not its alright to label people. personally i dont use labels especially when reffering to myself. i feel that labels set boundries, allthough no one can really figure out what these labels are truely descirbing. catch what im saying?.
probably not. i cant explain it well.
but i dont think that people should be limited to the stereotypes of a certain subculture, heaven forbid they break a rule and , gasp, they'r now a royal poseur.
some of you are combining different styles, thats what i mean. not many people can be described under a certain label.
gah. enough of this rant. labels suck!.

I feel the same way actually. Labels are limiting. I refuse to be subject to the "rules" of any culture/subculture.

Well yeah. I'm definitely interested in a lot of gothic archetypes/aesthetics etc. I just don't take it seriously as a form of identity. Nothing wrong with talking about it.

Do you remember when the whole "goth" connotation came about and why? I can vaguely remember a time when a style was gothic but noone was a "goth". Death rocker etc.

That was still when they were labelling bands gothic tho. I'm thinking it may have started more when bands like Christian Death and Sisters of Mercy started gathering scenes around them.
