Naa, I think you misunderstood something here. Quentin Tarantino doesn't own the rights to "Hero". Never has, never will. It is owned by Miramax, who just happen to be the guys that are producing and releasing his movies. The Weinsteins thought that Hero wouldn't be profittable on the US-Market, and therefore canned it for almost 1 1/2 years, and only because QT said that he would "present" the film they're putting it out now. It's only because QT's Name means money, nothing lese, nothing less. Miramax(e) tends to pile up the rights to various asian movies, to either never release them, or only after a few years (when every real fan already has a bootleg or an imported version) or heavily cut, redubbed, retitled and rescored (see various Jet Lee Films and "Shaolin Soccer". New Line did the same with Jackie Chan's "Rumble in the Bronx", "First Strike" or "Mr Nice Guy"). "Hero"'s limited theatrical run in Cities like L.A. or NY was simply because of the Academy Awards, as they tried to cash in on the success Columbia had a few years ago with "CTHD" (But it didn't work out for them, "Somewhere in Africa" from Caroline Link was the superior movie )

If you had a bad version of CTHD it certainly was a bootleg. Why? Because CTHD was a US-Production all along. Chinese Crew, british Photographer, US-Money (or, well.. japanese Money, as Sony/Columbia is still a japanese Company).

The differing in quality always has to do with the masters they're using. In Asia, Movies are an every day thing like Milk or Bread. In HK you go into a VCD/DVD-Store, buy a few films (VCDs cost normally around 80 cents top 1,30$, DVDs start at 2 $), watch them and throw 'em away. In many cases there aren't even any masters of older films! They used to master on beta, and after some time just recorded a new movie over the existing one. That's the reason why many older Films from Guys like Jackie Chan or Sammo Hung always have the Label of "Atlas Film" in the Credits, as they had to come and get the old german masters, as we always handled the world sales.

Another thing is, that many (smaller Labels) especially in Britain tend to take just an DVD as the master, it's much cheaper than to take the negative and make a new print of it. A good example is Tartan, who put out the Ringu-Trilogy long before Countries like the US even took notice. They're grainy, colors washed out and mostly hardsubbed. One company that always does the best prints worldwide is Britain's "Hong Kong Legend's". It doesn't get better than this, and even their us-american counterparts simply suck. The only complaint with HKL is, that sometimes they put trailers on the dvd, that they made themselves, if they couldn't find the original theatrical trailer. And i tell you, a Trailer to "The Killer" with music from Hans Zimmer's "Directors Cuts: Action" simply sucks

But in the end all this talking is just blabbering. All that counts is the movie, just take a look at "Van Helsing". The production values etc were great, but the movie totally stunk. No anamorphic 16:9 Letterbox with DTS 6.1. Secrete can save a bad movie...

Its funny you saying you had been looking for a mannequin for sometime, I was too. I just bought one off e-bay. I dont know why, I guess to help with some sewing projects I want to get started, but I have always thought it would be cool to have one.

Nope not banned...you can import it no problem. You can even by the manga of it at any local bookstore...last I head it was still being "fought" over by distributors...

I like these banned stories though...makes a film seem more important than it really is. Like I AM CURIOUS...while I liked the film and all I guess it was something racy back in it's day...Battle Royale at least for me was a High School version of the Mortal Kombat games...fun but it loses some of it's punch in the states.

The official explanation is at the website and they allude to the fact it may be due to the fact the violence is teen on teen.

    http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/movie/banned.html

Now the sillyness of this theory is that the U.S. INVENTED the genre of violent teens going after one another....from classics like Rebel Without A Cause to any teen drama you can think of. Plus ultra violence in American Cinema is the EXACT thing the rest of the world complains about when it comes to american movies. The school shooting reasons are rediculous...kids wipe out their classmates for far more serious issue then a fucking movie.

It really boils down to Toei being Toei...they've always been total dicks about their properties in the U.S. so why anyone is shocked they're acting like this yet again is beyond me.

The real shame in all this is that they seem to think the U.S. market functions like that of Japan. The amount of content coming into and produced in the U.S. is insane...so while BR may be a gem it can easily got forgotten like so many other classics that never the the light of day till decades later.

However...if anyone is to be truly to take blame for this mess it's the American Film Going Audience....particularly the morons who take kids and teens to R rated films. Thank you people...you've ruined it for all of us. Now R is simply "PG-13 with tits and blood...maybe". As a result more and more R rated films are being cut so it can be acceptable for the underage crowd to view it or be taken to films like this.

Years back when NBK was a big deal the screening I went to had a 5 year old kid in the audience...I mean come on...that's just rediculous. I'm the last to care if someones kids sees a violent film...but when this demographic begins to effect the way films are edited and distributed...then it starts to get annoying.

Just look at all the R rated films recut and toned down to ger PG-13 ratings...it's just sad. It's this kind of nonsense that keeps BR out of theatres...yet gang violence by teens on everyone else goes on glorified by idiot musicians, films themselves, news stories, and music videos.

Seems I went on a little rant there. Heh.

"Gummo" is an interesting, funny one.
I saw "The Butcher Boy" years ago. Thought it was cool when he finally did that nasty old lady in.
I just saw Shrek 2 last night. Very cute.
Also saw this strange & eerie but beautiful anime called "Lain" a few months ago.
Sorry, my list comes to me at strange times and I never remember all of it on demand

Here are some old classics that are worth mentioning....

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane -- Bettie Davis and Joan Crawford as sisters that love to hate one another. Given the fact that they actually hated each other in real life makes this movie a lot of fun to watch.

A Stranger is Watching -- Carol Kane as a babysitter who is terrorized by the creepy guy upstairs. It is a shame that Miss Kane didn't make more horror films. She would have been a legend.

The Fall of the House of Usher -- Vincent Price, Edgar Allen Poe, a young woman buried alive ... what more could you ask for.

Macbeth -- The original black and white version with Orson Welles in it. One of the best Shakespeare films in existence.

And just for something completely different... for laughs, try Zorro the Gay Blade or History of the World Part 1.
