    I don't think god exists.

    But...

Do you remember that old Star Trek episode, where they went to the center of the universe, and there was this entity, an old man, with a beard, with a "wrath and hellfire" attitude? For those people who believe in a traditional god, who is to say that there isn't a powerful extra-terrestrial entity, that actually does come down, and tell people to worship him, etc?
So I always give the benefit of the doubt to people who want to believe in that kind of god.
    Hell, maybe they are right...

    But I doubt it.

I think people start believing in god, when they realize their own mortality, or when they realize people they love are going to die. Then they want to believe that they are still out there, somehow, not just dead and gone. That is scary for people. So they want a happy answer, with a heavenly outcome, where you see everyone again, etc...

The truth is too brutal and harsh for most people to accept.

I do believe in God. But, it seems pointless to me to try to prove it to others. I think it is very much both for people at times, that there is and is not a God. Same thing with anything, in the right circumstances. It's the impression and the honesty of what you feel that is important. And I like your cross between an analogy, view of both sides and honesty.

And yeah, I like to hope that we can let people believe what they want to believe.
If people like the Branch Davidians want to live in their own little world, fine.
If people like the Amish want to do their thing, fine.

The thing that pisses me off, is people trying to shove their ideas down
    other people's throats.

I'm very tolerant of religious beliefs of any kind, as long as you do not knock on my door a 8AM on a Sunday morning, trying to tell me about saving my soul, etc...

My attitude was and still is: "If God is so great, God can do it and do it right. No little extremist, conformist or fundy is going to ever do it right in any way ever. Of course, they get new converts every year (so do cults).

They feel that they have to prove to god that *they* are trying.

They feel like they are the "hand of god" in the world.

Some of them believe that god does not do anything directly.
That "he" allows life to play out, and it is up to his followers to change the world.

Like it is all a big game.

They seem to think it is *very* important to make sure everyone is "saved".
Otherwise god might think they did not try hard enough...

    Fucktards.

    God is dead,
    and no one cares.
And if there is a hell,
    I'll see you there...

Well, there is a definite difference between God and how people behave. I mean it's very obvious on how we choose to act. I don't think it's all that valid, and very Freudian, to say that I hate God because of how people act, or how my life has been. There is enough metaphysics in even the atheist movement to take responsibility for how one acts and the example one puts out there (can you tell I deal with the mildly retarded and crazy).

I was once waiting for the bus and this sort of crippled guy started talking to me. I was way to used to freaks on the bus that were cramming their ideologies down my throat so I did my best avoid them. He started to talk about how he didn't really give a shit about God and then got in a big industrial accident. He found actual release from pain in communing with God. But, as an interesting point, he found that the missionary thing and shoving it down other peoples throats just diminished what he had. So, he entered into private and small group worship. Then, one day he read a book on Taoism.

All his friends criticized him and gave him a lot of shit for "going off the path." I liked Taoism at the time and asked him what happened. He said he read the book and he liked it. He didn't find anything that was against God or "wrong," he found it added to his life and improved the quality of his relationship with God.

Just a story, but maybe analogous to something.

Besides, I doubt ol' Trent of NIN doesn't believe in God. His God is green with big tits and makes him say moo quite a bit.

    Taoism is cool.

Much more of a philosophy than a religion.

A way of handling life, and dealing with life.
