Wow, Rick James is dead. Died at age 56 of cardiac arrest, possibly caused by a cocaine-weakened heart, possibly just natural causes. Respected news sources seem to disagree on the cause of death. I really liked Super Freak but I was not a big fan or anything. But this news still seems really sad to me. Rumor was that Rick James was working on his autobiography and there was talk about Dave Chapelle playing him in the movie adaptation.
This is not a time for mourning, but a time for the celebration. Yes, he is dead, hail and farewell, but he gave so much to the world, and his death came at a time when his star was finally rising again.
Yes, cocaine is a hell of a drug. And Rick did some things to be ashamed of, and he was punished. He lived hard and died before his time. But we should remember the good. The hot-ass women in slutty clothes that he brought to our homes via MTV. The ass-busting bass lines he created. The hairstyles he wore so that we did not have to.
Rick James is dead, and this may seem cruel and unfair. But I do not feel that he would want us to mourn him in silence and reflection.
For what he did in his life, he did write a few songs that had some pretty well intentioned meaning. I grew up with him a little bit and he was really one of the few funky sort of disco rockers that made it out of the 70s intact, it seemed to me. Fare thee well, funkmaster.
