    Default Evening all...

On another of those days when a stubborn hangover meant doing a good deal more surfing than working I stumbled across this board and found myself getting drawn in. I'm a writer from England with a penchant for all things dark and deviant and it looked like I might find a few kindred souls on here.

Btw, does anyone know that movie Caligula from Tinto Brass? Where Malcolm McDowell shows his dick and gets blowjobs from Helen Mirren and Teresa Ann Savoy? Totally need to get a copy of that one, great movie, heh.

    Hi, btw.

    Thanks for the welcome all.

My, but we do have a cultured crew on here! K's quite right, Caligula was actually a nickname (the proper monicker was Gaius Juius Caasar Germanicus) - he was called 'Little Boots' because while on campaign with his father as a boy, he wore army boots so he could be like the soldiers they marched with.

History lesson over. 'Caligula's a cool movie. It spelt the end of the first craze for 'Porn Chic' in the 70s, when going to see porn movies like 'Deep Throat' and 'The Devil in Miss Jones' had become so hip, it looked like hard core sex would become a feature of mainstream cinema. The 'Penthouse' magnate Bob Guccione put a fortune into 'Caligula' hiring 'proper' actors, epic sets, and even employing Gore Vidal to write the script. But the world wasn't ready for porn in a high brow mainstream production, it bombed and those involved disowned it in droves, claiming that Guccione had inserted the hard core footage without their knowledge. Ironically, the only version widely available in the UK is heavily cut, and it comes across as a bit limp...

I have seen it - but no-but neither T. A. Savoy nor Helen Mirren (who's the mother in law of an acquaintance of mine) performed any hardcore acts- those were inserted (pun) later on with some porn actors and actresseses..although there is plenty of nudity with the female leads..it's a lousy movie -that's why it bombed- P.

Hey, it might not be 'Citizen Kane', it may even be pretty silly, but it's never boring.

I liked Caligula (the movie) a lot, it still disturbs me to this day!, but there's another movie out there about the good ol' Roman times I'd recommend called I Claudius. It has Patrick Stewart when he had thick, curly golden locks in it! The best part is you can probably find it for free at your local library.

No I wouldn't call it boring- nor would I say that of 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'-- but still bad movies...P.

Yes that was the 12 part BBC miniseries--excellent..although maybe even there we see Stewart starting to thin..P.

The BBC series was great. My other half bought it for me - all 8 plus hours of it - so the fact that I got through it in a week or so is a tribute on its own. The sets are a little wobbly, and there's nothing even approaching a crowd scene, but it's all about the performances and scripts, which are universally excellent.

I don't think 'Caligula' is bad in the same way as 'Plan 9...' even if it's bad at all, and I'm not convinced. There's some good acting and amazing sets in 'Caligula' and even 'Plan 9...' keeps you amused and sticks in the memory. From my perspective bad film-making is formulaic crap that insults the viewer with its sheer cynical contempt for cinema as an art form, that washes by, forgotten in the second you leave the multiplex. Say 'The Mummy Returns' or 'Lake Placcid'.

I've never seen it myself, but from what I'm told, murdering everybody who liked '2 Fast 2 Furious' would double the world's average IQ in one fell swoop. Armchair (or should that be 'cinema seat'?) eugenics anyone?...

    Welcome Caligula.

I liked the movie, i think Malcolm MacDowell is deliciously creepy(especially in Clockwork Orange and Cat People). And I claudius was perhaps the best miniseries i've ever seen.

I hope you enjoy BlueBlood long and intensely.

Thanks again for the warm welcome all.

Always good to find another good place in which to while away the hours I should be working. There's only so much staring out the window and rearranging my desk I can cope with. Damn this being self-employed lark! I'm banking on the cat evolving opposable thumbs so she'll do the work for me.
