I know I can tell if it is really Jack I am drinking. Some bars think if it is mixed with Coke you can't really tell. Can you?

Yes...you can tell by how smooth it is/isn't. Plus...the next day if you feel like ass after 4 or 5 drinks...you got the cheap stuff. That or you are just a lightweight. Cheers.

I know if they try to pass of shitty tequila as Cuervo Gold, everytime. I don't go to bars though, fine restaurants are very strict about giving you excellent drinks in my experience. Also, if you tip the bartender at these places, you will get stronger drinks. I do.

That's why it's a good idea, if you're ordering an expensive drink, to watch the bartender make it. If the bartender's a light pourer, tell them to measure it out too. If they take a bottle of top-shelf stuff and fill it with rotgut, that's illegal and they can get into a lot of trouble. I think I can tell if I'm drinking a top-shelf liquor if it's served straight or on the rocks and I'm familiar with the brand. If it's mixed I doubt I can tell. You shouldn't mix top-shelf booze anyway.

I'm way too cheap to order top shelf at bars, especially for mixed drinks, since all the sugar in the mixers overpowers the taste. If I'm getting a martini or drinking something straight, that's different.

I take it for granted if I'm drinking someplace with neon signage of any sort, the top shelf stuff is watered or worse.

I think I can tell at the time, but I hate it when I find out the next day that I couldn't.

I dont drink alchohol, so I was wondering: What do some of the drinks taste like? Particularly Cold Gin, and also Vodka.

I can't drink, but I think I could kind of tell at the time back when I could.

I can usually tell. But I have a highly developed sense of smell and very picky taste buds. I usually don't care though. If I'm drinking it's to get drunk and the barrel is just as effective as the top shelf stuff.
