Perhaps the reason the porn portions don't exactly read true because 'porn' is not the true motivation of the book; it is, as you described, an artistic exploration of art, society, philosophy and whatever, with porn thrown in as a secondary subject to spur book sales--even the word porn is in the title, I think more people would buy it just on the basis of that (the title) then a book titled: Anarchic Philosophy in Artistic Culture.
I recently picked up the book Prisoner of X (20 years in the hole at Hustler Magazine) by Allan MacDonell. I don't know if it's any good as I haven't started it yet.
