Bikerpunk is HIV NEGATIVE

Just a little public service announcement.

The county did one of those free, anonymous, confidential know in 20 minutes testing type things today, and given it had been a year since my last test, I went ahead.

The pre-jab counsellor asked me what I knew about HIV. After answering her, she offered me a job.

Painless jab, blood draw... results in 20 minutes. They asked, given my behaviour and history, why I bothered, to which I said I truly believe that sexually active adults NEED to test at least once a year, and I'd be a hypocrite if I agreed with the guidelines health departments advise, but didn't follow those myself.


NEGATIVE.

If I ever get sexual, I only ever play safe with people I know, but the chance of being HIV free is always technically non-zero.

That safeguards me and anyone I might be with in my future.

so that means if you have sex with someone else that is negative, you'll get HIV.

(ya know, two negatives equals a positive.)

That also applies to masturbation (-1 to the power of 2 is 1)

My personal favorite: 1 + 1+ 1 = a threesome

negative atracts positive.

Actually, come to think of it, I saw him speak/perform at a business convention for internet professionals I went to. He was sorta overshadowed by the crazy wine guy though.

Yeah, I get tested on a regular basis too. I am safe, and tend to be monogamous, but you still never know. I get lots of tattoos, and there is always the rare chance that you could get it from some totally random source. It just makes everyone you are involved with feel better about the whole thing, is you know you are clean.

i get tested, ive worked as a volunteer in a hiv+ drop in centre, its enough to scare a risk taker into being safe, that and the swab test (ooh that smarts)

Obviously, I'm being quite faceteous. There are some very promising recent breakthroughs on the subject though. Innovative, sound concept; treatment proven effective in animal trials. Human clinical trials are next up.

human clinical trial have been going on outside the US for years... they still don't quite understand HIV or AIDS... i for one think that 2 condoms and a zip tie might just be the answer in questionable situations...

good link! thanks i haven't seen this info. my father (yes i said it) started doing AIDS/HIV research back in SF in the 80s... i grew up with a scientist father who devoted himself to cancer and aids (once it surfaced) i am still amazed at how long it has taken to get where we are with both cancer and aids/hiv... my company is primarily focused on the IVF world but still quietly does other research on the side.

Yeah, 30 years from discovery to the possible approach of a cure/vaccine is horrible on the scale of human development. Not in the least because it gives the virus leeway to evolve, itself.

Every time you kill something you discover something scarier. Makes you wonder why people spent so much time worrying about killing one another. Might be because it's more satisfying, though.

Bikerpunk doesn't have to worry. AIDS was designed to kill the black man. He'll be fine.

Actually, we've made incredibly rapid strides in terms of HIV. From identifying the disease to coming up with a test for it, to treatments, to potential vaccines... we've come a tremendous way in a VERY short space of time.

we have come a tremendous way in a very short time, but compared to other technology (i.e. computers, Moore's Law) medicine can move very slow. The body is a crazy bio-machine... we can detect HIV and Cancer sooner than we used to...sometimes, but prevention (other than condoms and abstinence) is non-existent... and there still is no cure, only delaying the inevitable. hopefully we will figure it out... I think we may never know or cure certain things because the earth has a way of re-balancing nature every so often...

I just got tested for everything 2 weeks ago and am happy to report...disease free! YAY!!!!
