is there such a thing as a Californian accent?
this sweet old lady at a grocery store told me "you have such a lovely californian accent". Im originaly from CA and just moved to TX a few years ago, so im wonderin if there is such a thing or if the lady was just crazy :1orglaugh.
on a similar note the guys at work tend to get a kick when i use words like "dude" "gnarly" and "rad' >_>

Re: is there such a thing as a Californian accent?
Barring valley girls and Chicanos from East L.A., I never really thought so myself. Living in Florida and hearing all kinds of accents, when you stumble upon a person with no accent, we usually call it a "California" accent. "Gnarly" and "rad" just remind me of California skateboard or surfboard talk. Kind of like how people from Boston use "wicked" alot. Now if you say "gnarly" like Spicolli from "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"....Maybe that would be considered a type of accent, but more like a stoner accent than a California accent.

Re: is there such a thing as a Californian accent?
Everyone has an accent. Provided they talk.
-
Re: is there such a thing as a Californian accent?
i actualy use the mexican slang sometimes but not alot lol. I used to skate when i was in high school thats where i picked up gnarly and rad. I just thought dude was a universal word evryone used lol

I have multiple accents.
I have split-accentality syndrome.

Re: is there such a thing as a Californian accent?
When I moved from California to Minnesota people could tell I wasn't from here, sadly sometimes I catch myself with a Minnesotan accent, and I cringe afterwards. But I said "eh" before I even moved here, I just like saying it.
-
Re: is there such a thing as a Californian accent?
its weird to me cause i never knew there was an accent i always figured people in california spke "normal" english but i guess it must be true then. I think theres still a big diference between slang and an accent tho

Re: is there such a thing as a Californian accent?
There really is a California accent. It may not exactly be the prototypical surfer-dude accent, but I've been gone for MANY years now, and people still think I sound like I'm from Cali.

Yeah. I'm told its kind of a milder version of the cliche.

That has to work nicely however. There are alot of people of Mid-Western origins in Cali. ^_^ A huge chunk of my family anyway!

i dont think saying stuff like dude and totaly counts as an accent. i think for it to be an accent it would be noticeable in hoe the words soun not slang words.
