hey people, I need your help. we just finally got our laptop back, but we really need security on it, because we are both sick to death of viruses and not having a computer for forever and a day when we get one. any suggestions? he says norton, I say free AVG...... let me know, y'all.
Free AVG is quite ok. Doesn't slow your performance and is reliable.
Good advice is to get advanced system care from IObit. It fixes everything for you ;)
AVG free is OK for basic email and web scanning but is rather limited and the update process can be a little klunky. Easy to install for basic users though.
Avast! 4 home edition detects more stuff (it checks IM traffic and P2P shares for example, which AVG does not) but the user interface is a love-or-hate affair, and whilst free you do have to re-register every so often. I used to run AVG on some of my old laptops but switched to Avast and prefer it. Will sometimes object to legit stuff but that's better than letting nasty stuff get past.
Aside from AV, it's important to install a firewall (or activate the one in Windows if you're on XP or Vista), as that'll catch any attempts to hack into our out of your system even if not strictly the result of a virus. Y/should also install Spybot Search & Destroy (a free remover of all that adware and tracking info websites will try and stick you with).
Oh, and welcome back to the world of keyboards. Now your thumbs can get a long-overdue rest.
I love SpyWare Doctor. It seems to keep all the baddies away. Comes with it's own firewall and spyware remover and etc. Easy to use too.
Stop visiting free porn sites (unless they are run by people you know :)) and torrent sites 'cause that is where most malware lives.
For what it is worth, I am not a fan of Norton, although it is better than McCaffee.
I always used Kaspersky, I just like the name I guess...................I've never had a problem

Kaspersky Internet Suite. Scans EVERYTHING you do online and off. Virus free for over a year now.

someone said it was my browser as well. I use explorer. I was told to start using firefox or safari for pc. any truth to this?

Nah dude, I think she's just plain fucking dumb. When "A Simple Life" first came out, I think alot of people thought it was an act, but no, after all this time...And she still acts the same exact way? Dumb as a box of rocks. Firefox is generally "nicer" and there are many who'll say it's safer, but it depends on what's attacking it. Both FF and IE regularly issue automatic updates and both are becoming more and more similar as the versions go on (tabbed browsing, etc). I have avg, it cant get rid of sny viruses, but stores them insted
Also, it is always turned off, but I cant turn it on. Maybe it has a virus....
Your best bet is gonna be NOD32 smart security. Thing has stopped some pretty heavy duty malware. Has a pretty decent firewall as well. So far has been the best anti-virus to run across xp and vista. It will run about $60 for a 1 year license.
