Well, they existed long before both Fraggle Rock and the Dark Crystal were made. I first saw them around 1979 or 1980...
One of my best friends in high school was Danish and, speaking English as a second language, she sometimes was very literal in her descriptions.
She came over while I was watching The Dark Crystal. Watched for a few. Then turned to me and said, "Why are the puppets torturing each other?"
