Cordial greetings to all - I'm new
Hi.
I'm pretty new to message boards communities. Even though I’ve been surfing around on the internet for years I’ve never joined one before. I was aimlessly surfing around the internet today when happened upon this board. Then I had an urge to increase my "social capital" be a part of a community.
Some stuff about me (A.K.A. An awesome first impression and reasons why people should love me)
I’m currently a freshman at the local JC (I was a bit too much of a slacker in high school) and I’m majoring in political science. I’m a major politics and news junkie: I can’t ever get enough CNN.
I know I’m a pretty strange person. I have far more than my share of strange quirks. (I hate the number four for example. I prefer 1,2,3 and any factor of five. Other numbers bother me. Except with eggs. I always need an even number of eggs.) I enjoy reading about serial killers late at night even though it tends terrifies me. There have been numerous occasions where I’ve scared myself too much to go to sleep. I’ve yet to figure out why I keep doing this. While on the other hand I like to cook and enjoy watching HGTV from time to time. I really like cute things like the color pink, fluffy pillows, and things of that sort. After all one of my favorite movies is the Princess Diaries.
The greatest love of my life is probably music. I don’t know where I’d be without music. As cliché as it sounds, I listen to any kind of music. I can enjoy any kind of music as long as it doesn’t suck there’s always bad seeds within any genre, to me it’s just finding a good group to listen to. My favorite musicians would probably be Dir en grey and Lisa Loeb (a weird combination, I know.) In my spare time I enjoy playing guitar and reading learning about anything music related.
I think that’s everything important about me. I hope this wasn’t too self indulgent and extensive of an introduction…
So that’s me.

Welcome to Blue Blood. I think you will find being eclectic fits in just fine here. Dir En Grey carrying on some of the basics of rock which most of the American music industry has forgotten.

Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new
Thanks for the welcome, incog. I love how Dir en grey fills the void of creativity in most American music. The popularity of Usher's "Yeah" just makes me think there's a dearth of people who appretiate music...or actual lyrics for that matter.

Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new
I like the booty babes in rap videos but it just isn't rock you know.

Thanks for the welcome all.
incog, I don't dislike all rap. I don't mind The Black Eyed Peas or Outkast. I actually like the Black Eyed Peas. It's mostly just Usher I dislike.

I wish Usher would get eaten alive by rabid squirrels. :angel-smi

Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new
You're nicer than I am. I'm not sure what I wish. Just something more brutal. I hate that stupid confessions song. And isn't it like confessions Volume II? He's fucked up twice? Who is this girl friend of his that lets him get away with that? And she forgives him just cuz he strips? I find the whole thing silly. (does he have hypnotic nipples or something?) I really dislike, "yeah." I could write a song like that. Except it'd be smarter. I'd say, "affirmative" over and over.

Wouldn't that be like...using your powers for evil? Would you be a super villian? Would you have a cool name? (To go along with your admittedly evil - cool powers. Super suave-osity is pretty cool, I must admit.)

Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new

Metal metal? A lot of them. Old Metallica (Master of Puppets and a few other songs), Megadeth, Black Sabbath, In Flames, Rammstein, Fear Factory, Rob Zombie, White Zombie, System of a Down. I listen to other bands like Slayer, Arch Enemy, Mudvayane, O.T.E.P. and stuff...but that's more like when they pop up on Yahoo radio or whatever. Not really into them.
If you count Dir en grey metal, I like them too.
You? What instruments do you play?

Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new
Thanks for the welcome all. I'm amazed how nice everyone is. I've spent time skulking around and just reading other message boards (guitar ones looking for info). Everyone on those boards always ends up arguing and fighting about weather Kirk Hammet is god or not. I'm really impressed.

Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new

Oh, I hadn't realised that these two groups were rap artists; I thought they were hiphop. Funny, because they describe themselves as hiphop too; well, you live and learn.

There's a difference between hiphop, rap, and R&B.

Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new
I like K-os he is killer, outkast and BEP are alright simply for their lyrical content. I still hate anything with a driving bass! Even EBM!!!! Its gott aheve a drumbeat to it.

Exactly, and I wouldn't have called BEP rap artists, nor Outkast.
Sarcasm only works when the person receiving a sarcastic remark understands it. :)

Hip Hop is the umbrella that Rap falls under...R&B is it's own style and genre.
Hip Hop has a long evolution that eventually gave birth to rap, "turntableism", and all the other rediculous labels idiot music writers gave birth too at the turn of the century to make albums easier to pigeonhole...at the end of the day though Hip Hop is the genre that gave birth to all the styles associated with it. Rap can be a genre unto itself but given that it spawned from the hip hop DJ scene it's hard to really say it's an exclusive genre unto itself. Especially when so much of it uses various hip hop styles to come alive.
As far as what to label BEP and Outkast..they're hip hop artists at the core but they break genre's pretty regularly. Plus they make their work to varied and lively you really can't even place what should be an easy song to catogarize IN that catagory...always fun stuff.

I actually meant to type a question mark...
-
Re: Cordial greetings to all - I'm new
I dismissed rap music for years and years....I was all about the 70s stuff.
But then I started hearing some old tid-bits and I got to thinking....yeah I could smoke to this!...some nice heavy baselines....some raw power in the vocals...it can be pretty cool if you look hard enough...as a side note....its generally better to consider rapper's vocals as an instrument, if you actually get caught up in the lyrics YOU'RE DOOMED!!!
Doggystyle turned me on to it.....

I've never thought about it that way. I always got the impression the lyrics were important. That's why I tend to dislike rap. I don't find getting women drunk and screwing them at a party all that interesting.
