one last piece of political jabber before the weekend.
does anyone really believe that democratic elections in Iraq are going to stop people over there killing each other?
sigh. 'tis depressing, a little.
The illusion of freedom in America will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre.

i'm sure they've done a cost-analysis of that, and decided they'd make more money with the current system.
if there was any profit to them in us all being slaves, we'd all be building pyramids right now while chunky guys with whips encouraged us.

Re: one last piece of political jabber before the weekend.
yeah, I guess you're right, they just changed tactics.
They still got us building all types of shit; corporate pyramids for their banks, clock towers to remind us when to go back to work & restrooms for recovering alcoholics.
The beauty is that we don't even realise.
They still got the whips in my workplace tho.

Re: one last piece of political jabber before the weekend.
there's no such thing as a democratic election. it went out long before the fall of greece. but let's put it this way, if they get somone in power that they want and all foreign troops leave the country, yes. ok. so choice A isn't going to happen, it's not profitable. choice B we put in someone who's just as bad as saddam, but is economically loyal to us,and turns the country into a militant police state and who kills everyone who resists him, but you don't hear about it on the news anymore cuz it's not americans that are dying, and we say "mission accomplished." or choice C things go the same as they are now with no one getting anywhere, but it's still not a loss cuz we continue to pay taxes to support it and the government officials get to go on lots of vacations. I'm betting one of those two.

Well according to George Lucas, not specifically talking about iraq, of course... -

Re: one last piece of political jabber before the weekend.
The idea of the US government setting up a democratic election should make anyone gasp in disbelief - just look at the crap that came about with the first Bush election and the total lack of democracy there.
With probably more than half of Iraq excluded from an election it cannot be termed democratic or representative and, no, it isn't going to stop the killing at all.

you know, the Emperor Claudius said very much the same thing, inbetween telling people he was going to restore the Republic as soon as possible.
heh. i like the story Robert Graves tells about how Rome needed a better harbor. Claudius calls some engineers in, tells them to build it. they said "we'd need to make it from concrete, and we can't get it to set in salt water. it won't work." Claudius tells them "Find a way. or..." and the engineers rushed off, deathly afraid.
Claudius was going to say "... or we'll need to build it somewhere else." they thought he was saying "... or i'm gonna have you guys strung up by your balls." they worked day and night and 72 hours later solved the problem.
sometimes, it's good to be an Emperor.

you can't force democracy on a people, any more than you can force everyone to use the Dvorak keyboard layout. they'll choose it themselves, when they're ready. which may be never.

Sadly there are certain government ministers - and higher - who do not understand this. They honestly believe that everyone would accept their form of democracy without a second thought if given the chance; and the chance is given in that you invade a country, destroy much of it, kill people all over the shop and thus win the hearts and minds of the survivors ...

democracy was a good idea in theory. Most democratic principles are great but in practice......well lets just say that I can pretty much understand why so many people resist it.

Re: one last piece of political jabber before the weekend.
yeah, plato was right, he said people need a republic because they are too stupid to be able to function as a democracy. however, the second part of that is that the republican representitives would be the best and brightest people in the society, unfortunetly they tend to ignore that nowadays and put in the dumbest and the worst because they happen to be the richest.

Pro-Life is one of the bulwark issues of the Republican base (voters) They turned out the base and won. It is always a major, tho unspoken, issue. The Dems are now considering pro-life Tim Roemer for party chair.

Re: one last piece of political jabber before the weekend.
well yes, i just find it retarded that people would vote for GWB. because he is anti-abortion & ignore all the other vile shit he's spewing about.
Its just ignorance I guess.
Abortion is still illegal over here, they had a referendum several years ago & the law was preserved, but only just. It gets tighter & tighter each time as the next generation become voters. It will be passed next time.
People just go to England to do it anyway, and occasionally there is a dutch abortion ship which sails into international waters and does the proceedure there.
