What happens when you cross a lion and a tiger?
What happens when you cross a lion and a tiger? Apparently scientists at multiple zoos have asked this question and actually tested it to create ligers and tigons. The Reno zoo, according to an article Halcyon found, is home to a liger. A liger has a lion daddy and a tiger mother and a tigon the inverse. Hobbs, the liger at the Sierra Safari zoo, has twice the mass of the largest cat which can be found in the wild. He has a lion's mane and a tiger's spots.

I'm thinking I need to make a detour to Reno next time I go through Nevada.

Side note : Even though I dont think it is a crossbreed, they actually have Winged Scorpions that can fly. **

Obviously, if you have a trained Chimp with 65,000 Asses, then it stands to reason that a chimp that has 65,001 Asses is sure to follow! :1orglaugh **

Re: What happens when you cross a lion and a tiger?
You will be interested in the zeedonk and the zorse then.

http://www.answers.com/main/content/.../bd/Zonkey.jpg
A zeedonk (also called similar names including zebrass, zebronkey or zenkey) is a mixed breed animal, a cross between a zebra and a donkey. Donkeys are closely related to zebras and belong to the same horse family. Zeedonks are very rare. Colchester Zoo in Essex claims to have produced the first zeedonk in 1971. A zeedonk is still exhibited at Colchester, but they now have a policy of preventing interbreeding and so will not be breeding more.
In South Africa they are called a zonkey and are fairly common where zebras and donkeys are found in close proximity. Like mules, however, they cannot breed, due to an odd number of chromosomes. (via answers.com)

A zorse is the offspring of a zebra stallion and a horse mare. It is a zebroid: this term refers to any hybrid equine with zebra ancestry.
The zorse is shaped more like a horse than a zebra, but has boldly striped legs and, often, stripes on the body or neck.
Like most other interspecies hybrids, it is infertile.

Re: What happens when you cross a lion and a tiger?
This stuff has been tried for a long time. It is definetly not new and actually quite cruel as scientists of the past have found. Because of how they are genetically they essentially make a feline that has a shorter lifespan, is much more prone to disease and cancer, as well as usually (I've never read of one that isn't) severly mentally retarded. Not so sure about the others, but man, the poor beast really suffers. :(

Then again, you can look at it as natural selection.
It can happen, and does happen, in the wild.
If the animal has cool new traits, or attributes, it will survive.
If it does not, it won't.

Oh, I totally agree on that point. It's just priests and scientists are such fuck ups and rarely think before they do a thing. Kind of like when the doctor doesn't read up on your medical history and finds you are deathly allergic to penicilin, in my opinion.

Re: What happens when you cross a lion and a tiger?
Grr... I showed my dad the website... but he doesn't believe tha ligers are real. then claimed I'm a conspiracy theorist. GRR! Then my sister joined in... I also told him about the prozac in england's water supply... which didn't help much. So now I'm a conspiracy Theorist in my dad's eyes. And very gullible... I am kinda gullible though.

Re: What happens when you cross a lion and a tiger?
yeah, a lot of stupid people don't beleive this is real.
-
Re: What happens when you cross a lion and a tiger?
Yeah, ligers have been around since the mid 90's I think. I remember watching the news and there was some liger breeding facility and they all got loose and killed almost everyone there. Luckily, this place was over in Africa, I think.
The animals are are twice as aggressive as a tiger. I don't know if you've ever been around a real tiger before, but they can be very hostile. A zoo I used to frequent allowed you play with baby tigers, lions, and bears in their adult petting zoo as long as there was a written agreement stating they weren't responsible for any accidents and weren't able to be sued.
They allowed lions to stay in the adult petting zoo until they were almost a year old!! Lions are hell of fun to wrestle around with, but can be fatal if they ever take it beyond play. My favorite was a male named Merlin. He almost had a mane the last time I played with him. He's all grown up now along with his companion, Candy, another lion I got to wrestle with. The tigers could only be left in there 3 or 4 months. The ones I got to play with were probably the size of a small/ medium dog. They looked very much liked baby cats, but if you pet them the wrong way or moved the wrong way you would get scratched and bitten pretty badly. My mother's boyfriend still has scars on his hands from being bitten.
Hahahaha, the same zoo had this one zebra that had a C-section and when they sewed her up they stitched her up so her stripes were off. It was pretty funny to see.
