CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
from scotsman -suspect source
Dude! They say the surf is awesome in California
CRAIG HOWIE
CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes about America’s most laid-back state - they are a bunch of tree- hugging, surfing "awesome dudes".
A new survey found that 67 per cent of Californians referred to friends as "dude", while 63 per cent said they had hugged a tree.
They were more likely than most Americans to attend wine tastings, go to barbecues and eat caviar.
Dennis Tootelian, a professor at California State University in Sacramento who conducted the survey, said: "The lifestyles of Californians have been the subject of debate and ridicule over the years, but surprisingly we do a lot of those things.
"I’ve never hugged a tree, but, come to think of it, I’ve done most of the things [in the survey questions]."
A fifth of Californians said they had taken a mudbath and 71 per cent of those said they had found the experience "awesome". A third of the residents of San Diego, commonly cited in the US as having the best climate on the globe, had been surfing.

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
I'm Californian. I generally do not call people "dude" or hug trees. I do like wine tasting. I've been surfing a few times. I don't think fat people should be neutered or spayed (unless they want to) Stereotypes are odious. (Californian = 90% of life except jaunts out of state for school/business)

P.S. Virtually none of my friends in Cali remotely resemble the stereotype:thumb:

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
And if people don't like California, they can feel free to continue living elsewhere...

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
naw, I actually like most people, I just don't like pretenious people. if you're an asshole you may get on my nerves, but at least I can respect you for being an honest asshole. When you hug a tree and drive an SUV though, I have little patience. Just be yourself, that's cool. if you're trying to impress me, you'll probibly fail.

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
Love Cali.... So much to do, so much nice weather, so many good looking, healthy people... Good hiking, swimming, recreation... Good place for computer programmers, artists and musicians... Good Universities... I think it is tough to knock California for just about anything... When it is the dead of winter here, the only place I want to be is napping on the beach at Santa Monica with all those "middle income" homeless guys on their ragged-ass towels... :p:

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
I admit I use "dude" a lot...but I don't surf or hug trees. Wouldn't live anywhere else though...every day it's a Fellini film come to life.

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
Never been to Cali, but I don't think I would enjoy it. I'm WAY too industralized to leave my motor city.

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
they didnt do that survey in my hood. the only thing I can say is the BBQ thing is true but who doest enjoy a good BBQ once and a while? wine tasting nothing wrong with that. I like a good Marlow every now and then.
Awsome and dude are a white thing and a beach thing not a hood thing so you know this wasnt conducted in Inglewood.

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
i would enjoy Cali for the beaches at night..if they were secluded...thats about it..i prefer a laid back, southern feel of things...kind neighbors, stress free, un-judgemental...i love florida...warmth, tropical island feel...friendly....lazy relaxation....too many ppl in tight spaces...freaks me all out...

Re: CALIFORNIANS really do live up to stereotypes
Who the rightious fuck did they survey?
Seriously, I have never hugged a tree and more people I know have humped trees than hugged them.
Sure a lot of californians have surfed, but a lot of utahnians have skiid. We make wine so a wine tasting is more likely, and sure we say dude and like more than the rest of ya, but I don't think I have used the word awesome for anything but to be funny since 1986. And a mud bath? How about 83% of californians can't afford crap like mudbaths.
Stupid surveys.
