It seems a safe bet to assume that true romance wasn't on Christian Slater's agenda Tuesday morning when he allegedly groped a woman in a Manhattan corner store.



The Very Bad Things actor was allegedly arguing with his girlfriend in the wee hours of the morning when he walked up behind another woman and firmly grasped her buttocks.



The woman flagged down police and reported the incident, pointing out Slater as the man who assaulted her.



The actor, 35, was arrested and charged with third-degree sexual abuse.



"Basically, he grabbed a woman's behind on the street," New York Police Sergeant Mary Doherty told CNN, adding that Slater was "intoxicated at the time."



A local ABC affiliate showed footage of the handcuffed Untamed Heart star being helped into a police cruiser while stating, "I didn't do anything."



The actor also reportedly threatened to sue his arresting officer and the New York City Police Department, a prosecutor said Tuesday.



Slater did not enter a plea at his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court Tuesday. He was given a July 14 court date and declined to speak to reporters as he left the courthouse, leaving his rep to do the talking.



"We believe this situation is the result of a misunderstanding and we are hopeful that this will be resolved shortly," Slater's publicist said in a statement.



It's certainly not the first time the Pump Up the Volume star has been accused of bad behavior.



In 1997, Slater was arrested after an out-of-control rampage, during which he allegedly walloped his girlfriend in the face, bit a man in the stomach and attempted to tear a firearm out of an officer's hand. The actor later indicated to authorities that his rage was fueled by a combination of heroin and cocaine.



The incident landed Slater in rehab and later in jail, where he served 59 days of a 90-day sentence.



Earlier this year, Slater filed for divorce from his wife of five years, television producer Ryan Haddon.



Signs of trouble in the duo's relationship cropped up in 2003, when Haddon was arrested in Las Vegas for hurling a water glass at Slater's head and causing a gash that required nine stitches to close.



No charges were filed against Haddon in the incident.



The couple now share custody of their two children, Jaden, six, and Eliana, three.



Slater is currently appearing in the Broadway revival of The Glass Menagerie opposite Jessica Lange.



His upcoming film, The Deal, costarring Selma Blair, is slated for limited release on Friday.

Movie star Christian Slater is desperate to fight sexual assault charges in New York, insisting he plans to sue police who arrested him.


The actor was arrested early May 31 after allegedly feeling a woman's bottom in a New York street, while intoxicated.

He grumbled, "This is bulls**t," as police escorted him to court in front of TV cameras, and told reporters he was considering legal action once the incident had been cleared up.

In a statement, Slater's publicist said, "We believe this situation is the result of a misunderstanding and we are hopeful that this will be resolved shortly."

Slater was booked on two sexual misconduct charges and released from police custody. He's due to appear in court again on June 14. The arrest is not expected to effect Slater's current run in hit Broadway, New York play The Glass Menagerie.

what's with this trend in older(80's) actors such as him,going to Broadway....

it's cool,but i always thought Broadway was much more,i don't know, Elite?........

Wow, the first article mentioned 5 projects he was involved with. That has to be at least close to a record, most celeb news articles mention one, maybe two projects they are involve in, or just give a lits of them but this one worked one into every 6th line.

Broadway has never been THAT elite if you start looking at the list of performers...it's just a diffrent TYPE of performer. The rule has always been if you want to act on stage or perform in front of a live crowd...you head to NYC...if you want to be in movies, tv, etc...you head to L.A.

The history of them crossing paths is pretty regular with Hollywood legends performing on the great white way and Tony Award winners populating various films and TV shows.

The downside to Broadway that SERIOUSLY needs to look into Pay Per View style showings is the fact you NEED to be in the general area to appreciate it. It'd be fucking amazing to be able to order a play or musical like you can a boxing match. While it is NOT the same...it is at least a way to SEE these shows that are routinely recorded and made available years to decades later...or never.

Their has to be something done to expand Broadway and make live theater more important and acessible...and if sports can do it...and do it well...anyone can.

It's not so much a trend as it is the reality that those actors are now the "old men" of the industry now...many are in their late 30's to late 40's...so it's only natural to see them do what others before them have done...go into theater. Look at Sebastian Bach...from hair band to Broadway star in some pretty high profile revivals...seems the 80's generation still has much life in it yet.

A lot of them have the talent to keep going. Johnny Depp started in '83, he'll be a leading man well into his 50s. 40 just isn't *that* old any more.

True enough...guess I meant more along the lines of them becoming the old guard since more and more of those before them are passing on. The fantastic actors from the 60's and 70's are not quite as immortal as they thought...kinda sad really to see them slowly pass on. Some have such a timeless quality you sorta wish they'd stick around forever.

I see a number of actors who have the potential to push the gauntlet. Personally, I don't think a lot of performers even come into their own before 30. You are right tho, it is going to be hard to match eras in which movies had to rely on "pure" acting as opposed to the grandeur of special effects going on now.

The acting style was a big part of it but you also had such genre busting and crafting masterworks like The Godfather, Alien, Star Wars, Jaws, etc. The decade is almost like the blueprint of the Hollywood we know now with many films still trying to capture that kind of lighting. Any decade with men like John Cassavetes, Francis Ford Coppola, and Al Pacino in their prime is gonna be hard to top...even with that talent out and brewing today. Each are still heavily used as a basis for acting and fimmaking styles...and they are only one SMALL fraction of that talent of that decade.

When you look at the "Best of..." films of that decade you find heavily influential classics each and every year. Add to the fact you have Robert Evans as the head of a studio and it's really an almost mythical time...

Tequila (which I wish I had a shot of now)....you have to wonder. When are we going to stop harkening to our younger years and live in the 'now' . Sure, alot of actors were bomb back in the day...but what makes them unique NOW. Acting has gotten alot more diluted now (less talent...see Paris Hilton)...but when are we going to move into the present?
I love the old actors (Barbarella is my fave movie of all time). Classics are wonderful...but when to current times become 'classic'?

Well it's not so much of a harkening back to a now dead age as it is about it casting such a big shadow. It was the age where acting got darkly serious and so did the films...raw emotion became the norm. Yet it also gave us the big fantasy epics like Star Wars and fun frights like Jaws. With that age and it's actors being the real power players it's hard not to move beyond them...but many do try and find a new generation to talk to.

The 80's produced excellent films that are being appreciated more and more each year and the 90's saw the true explosion of the indie scene and a new breed of creators. That generation if filmmakers is far from being low key since it's the true age of the blockbuster and home video markets. So essentially you have people exposed not only to their current generation but nearly every one before it.

Usually some time needs to pass before something is classic...but the term Modern Classic is now heavily used with films barely a decade old being seen in that way...like Tarantino's early work, assorted work from the Scott brothers, and big influential hits like The Matrix....add in the amazing stable of films Miramax has produced and you could spend the rest of your film life in the last decade alone and be happy.

The current age gets a lot more attention than the past in terms of sales and public knowledge but it's also producing nearly 10 times more than any age before it so it's a bit hard to focus on ONE film or actor anymore. We have our greats and classics (like Pulp Fiction...I remember being in High School when I saw that...and it was in the theater for nearly 9 months! you don't have films being in theaters that long anymore).

In the last 5 years things have dramaticly changed in terms of how we see, experience, and digest movies...DVD has helped but so has the above mentioned shorter theatrical lifespan. It's become much harder to be remembered...my own DVD collection (post LD and VHS years) is becoming a beast...and it's all stuff I genuinly enjoy but if I started watching ONE film a day it'd take me about 3 to 4 years to see them all. I'm not even one of the more hardcore fans and collectors...

If anything to be a classic today takes even more creativity...or one hell of a marketing pitch. People simply see more films than ever and to stand out in their mind is tough. It's easy to dismiss them as Hollywood focused or Blockbuster oriented but once you break past that you'll find they watch a wide range from nearly every age...that's a lot to compete with for new films.

Actors of the current age...with so many it's a massive pool to pick from. I'm a big fan of Chow Yun Fat mainly because he's of the school where you do ALL types of films. In the west he's known mainly for his John Woo action epics but in reality he's done everything from Soap Opera's, comedies, drama, etc. You get a wide range of characters and style and he continues to really make you see the characters he plays on screen without being a totally dedicated character actor. I'm actually more fond of character actors than I am of the big time personality driven performers so guys like Gary Oldman stand out for me, same with actresses like Lili Taylor. Johnny Depp has been a favourite of mine since I was hooked on 21 Jump Street...and while many dismiss and dislike the man...Leonardo Dicaprio. I've always enjoyed the roles he plays and the ability to bring the emotional part of it to the surface. Of them all the one I think always manages to surprise is Liam Neeson. If you look back in his roles since the 80's it's pretty much all over the place...from Darkman to Michael Collins and the upcoming Abraham Lincoln project.

It's a good topic with many many many more names to bring up...but those surface to my head the fastest. I'm sure I'll kick myself later for not bringing up someone though.

ohh, and i hate to admit it but Leanardo in that movie where he's a con man or whatever WAS really good,BUT i don't really watch movies.......ever.........
