What is the most important part of Satanism?

I usually avoid discussions of religion, but this topic has come up a lot lately. A girl I was setting up a shoot with a while ago asked if I was Wicca. Turns out she was sexually abused by a Satanic cult her stepfather was in when she was young and had to have four years of therapy for it. I really don't think abusing children is in the top ten "commandments" of most people who identify as Satanist. Whether or not you are personally a Satanist, what do you think is the most important part or most important concept and what, if anything, do you find appealing about it.

Satanists don't believe in hurting children nor animals and if you do something bad or commit a crime you should claim responsibility for it. They don't worship the devil, they worship themselves.. I know you know all of this Girlywhirly... Just stating it for the people who don't.

I think the most important part about Satanism for me is that it allows me to be me with the normal restrictions as any other human being. It's the whole do unto other's as you'd have them do unto you thingy.

Satanism is a very selfish philosophy/religion, but it doesn't mean you should lack morals. I'm a very moral person when it comes down to it, but I also have the freedom to intellectually and sexually be who the fuck I wanna be. I love that.

It sucks that she had to go through that. Sexual abuse on any level is hard to deal with.. eh. It's fucked. :(

This is a topic I can go on and on about.. I just don't have time right now at my stupid work. anyway...

I absolutely agree with Szandora. When I was younger I always was the one firmly believing in the "Golden Rule." My sister exposed me to other religions when she came out as Wiccan to our family. I then found Satanism, and it correctly represented most of my beliefs since I was very small. I think the most important part is accepting myself/others as they are and not feeling guilty about who I am and what I do.

And damn theres nothing hotter then a sexy Satanic chick. ::cough::Szandora::cough:: :)

The most important part, considering the Liber Al Vel Legis, is to treat people like they're non-existant. Don't ask any favours, don't ask for help, don't help them either. If they're threatening you, threat them in return. If they're hurting you, hurt them in return. Although I wouldn't call myself a satanist, I'm living by that simple rule.

That seems not only adolescent but deeply flawed. Society and humanity in general simply doesn't work that way...we're just not wired that way. We all need a favor now and then same with help.

I can only speak about myself, but you'll probably never see me asking anyone for a favour, mostly because I'm a total cripple when it comes to people skills. I just don't like talking with people, so I leave them alone and also want them to leave me alone. Nothing adolescent there.

Dunno about that man, you miss out on a lot that way. I'm not big on socializeing myself but it does have an important value...and one that shouldn't be neglected too much.

When I'm walking through the city or sitting in the subway, there are dozens of beggars and other people asking me for money, in school there are people asking me for help, etc. That's all quite annoying me. I don't even ask strangers for the current time, because I simply don't like talking to them. But I agree, asking a pal to give me that beer over there, is quite okay ,p

Um... Liber Al Vel Legis - Is the Book of the Law a Thelemic Order created by Aleister Crowley... NOT Anton Szandor LaVey.

In Satanism, you help who helps you. Matter of fact one of the main philosophies of Satanism is to use what you have to get what you want, to have people do favors for you. It doesn't mean it's one sided and you don't return the favor if a friend is in need.

Also, Aleister Crowley didn't believe in treating people like they were non-existent. I.E. then he wouldn't have created/been involved in the Order of the Golden Dawn, which they kicked him out of for sharing his philosophy and beliefs with the world, so other people who weren't in the order could read and follow what he believed in.

None of what you said pertains to Satanism. I suggest the next time you put your nose in it read about it first and get your philosophers straight.

Well, maybe I actually should read it again. Btw, I know that it's written by Crowley, I've got a copy somewhere on my harddisk.
I've downloaded it some years ago when I was interested in all that satanistic, wiccan and heathen stuff and tried to learn as much as I could about it. What I wrote above was my interpretation that manifested over the years, you seem to know quite much about satanism, so I won't argue with you. It's just that I got that idea when I was reading it, as I've said, years ago, and I've been living like that since then. It's a nice way to live, I don't have to worry if I might accidently hurt people by saying something wrong, I don't have to worry about my karma due to not giving a single cent to every beggar I see, etc. I ask no one for help and usually, most people won't recieve any help from me, that's all I was trying to say. Might not exactly be the satanistic way of life, but it's got the same roots.

And lets face it Catholic priest are convicted for molesting way more people then Satanist or even people into the occult in general do,But it's like Lavey said it just gets way more coverage if they can show something as a occult crime.
And I agree with you that sexual abuse it BAD.Let me HAVE to state that since I AM a Satanist someone will ask me that dumb freaking question.
But someone taking that altitude is prejudice.It would be like if you or I thought ALL catholic people molest people.You can't judge any type of person over the actions of one person or even a group of people.
You'd think the "Satanic Panic" of the 80's was long over but it's not.
I STILL have people seriously ask me questions like do you kill kids/animals because you are a Satanist.
That is just prejudice and offensive.
For me the most important thing about Satanism for me is being forced to use my own judgments for things and also understanding that even in nature there is a light and a dark side to everything.
