Lose your guns, Leave your pets
In all seriousness, I would just as soon fend for myself in a natural disaster. I have been shocked by the spectre of the Louisiana Homeland Security Agency turning away the Red Cross. Now, they're *creating* victims. Not only are guns being confiscated in what amounts to a war zone, they are forcing people to leave their pets to die! If I were in New Orleans, I'd be commandeering a boat with an AK and a motley gang of pissed-off cat owners. The madness in New Orleans reveals textbook examples of the types of government actions Madison wished to avert by passing the 2nd Amendment.
Oh, the "humanity"

thats one of the main reasons why so many had stayed in new orleans.. they couldnt leave their pets behind so they figured they might as well die next to them if they have too

We've raised a lot of money for http://www.noahswish.org and other organizations. It will all be to no avail if they don't let em on the boats.

Word is that the (I think) City Attorney Sherry Landers has given an order for police to shoot strays, although the New Orleans police spokesman would really prefer people asked her about it and not him.
The National Guard can't forcibly evacuate people without the Governor's say-so and the Governor refused to sign off on something as horrible as that. So the National Guard is driving "contractors" to people's homes and then the "contractors" take away residents' legal firearms, force them to leave their pets behind, and take the residents to relocation camps far from their lives and jobs and without their belongings, forcing them into welfare.
The supposed "contractors" look like central casting for excessively armed dudes in black from the back of Soldier of Fortune. Some Americans are trying to call them "contractors," but I am pretty sure they know other names for such people in other lesser countries where this sort of horror is more commonplace.
Oh yeah, and our government which is there to take care of us and uphold our fine Constitution . . . it tried to keep CNN from filming any of the evacuations or recovery of the dead. A Texas judge was so appalled at this trampling of our rights that he signed off temporarily in CNN's favor.

What exactly is the "contractors" legal status? I don't see how they can legally delegate that responsibility. At any rate, it's their funeral. Once the facts come out, there will be a major backlash against the handling of the "evacuation".

I'd stay too. I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees.

Note that strays will be created when loving pet owners are forced to "evacuate" against their wishes, leaving their perfectly healthy pets behind. What are they being "evacuated" for anyway? The dying part is done and the cavalry wasn't helping then.

It seems pretty unAmerican and illegal to me.
I hope the facts come out fast enough to save people.
Otherwise, the only result will be a bigger deficit and higher taxes, as the displaced and orphaned and widowed sue the government. And no amount of money will bring back dead loved ones or sentimental possessions. Or even help someone sleep at night, after they have gone through such a horrifying ordeal.
The NRA and the ACLU and every politician who genuinely wants to serve the people all need to act now. Not eventually. Now.

I'm not holding my breath at this point. Hopefully, they'll at least start formulating contingency plans for future disasters. This one is going to end up as a massive monetary settlement.
