Venom Opening Despite Louisiana Ties
from really scary
It could have been just another slasher flick, and one of the last of a rush of films Miramax is releasing as the founding Weinstein brothers sever ties with parent company Disney for good.
But Venom, about a voodoo-crazed serial killer, depicts murder and mayhem in the Louisiana swamps, debuts just a few weeks after Hurricane Katrina. Emily Bear, a spokeswoman for Dimension Films, told the AP that Venom was scheduled months ago for release this Friday, far prior to the hurricane.
"The film's plot is completely unrelated to the disaster in New Orleans," she said. " 'Venom' is a fictional horror film."
Miramax couldn't postpone the release of Venom even if it wanted to, though. The company must clear its slate of films by September 30 as part of Harvey and Bob Weinstein's break with Disney. The movie is being released nationwide, but only on about 800 screens.
Re: Venom Opening Despite Louisiana Ties
As I remember movies and events that happened once a f ew years back, there were two movies that had ties to 9-11 and were either postphoned or scenes redone to try to break the tie to a disaster. first was Collateral Damage, which we all know was about a terrorist attack in New York, and a Firemans involvement, which was a good move at the time I think, and the second was the Spiderman movie, where Spidey catches a helicopter in a web between the Towers, and that scene was deleted since the towers fell and were no more.
Two things come to mind with this new movie and the area in La it was filmed in, 1 life goes on wether or not the flooding and deaths happened, and if anyone is worried about things being similar, well, I doubt any would except that it was set in La, that this is really just a sci fi horror flick that really cant happen. and if the studios are worried about the impact it may have on people from the La / Mississippi areas, donate the opening nights take to the relief funds, that would bring in more funds to help rebuild the Homes and lives of people from there.
Re: Venom Opening Despite Louisiana Ties
I completely disagreed with the editing of SpiderMan and all the tv shows that were edited and censored to make it look like the towers were never there. I thought it was disrespectful to the memory of those who were lost.

Yeah, I usually end up catching the nightly rerun of Spin City before I go to bed and they constantly show B-roll shots of NYC, towers-intact and it's kinda nice to see actually.
