China's nuke warning to US on Taiwan

A Chinese general said that if the United States were to attack China in a conflict over Taiwan, he believed Beijing might respond with nuclear weapons, a newspaper reported Friday.

Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu, a dean at China's National Defense University, stressed that he was expressing a personal view, not official policy, The Asian Wall Street Journal reported. It said Zhu said he was confident that China and the United States would not go to war.

The Journal said Zhu made his comments to a visiting group of Hong Kong-based journalists. While Zhu is a serving officer, he isn't involved in policymaking or in directing military strategy.

China claims Taiwan, separated from the mainland since 1949, is part of its territory and has threatened repeatedly to invade should the self-governing island declare formal independence.

Zhu was responding to a question about how China might respond to US involvement in a conflict with Taiwan. The United States is Taiwan's biggest arms supplier and could be drawn into fighting to help defend the island.

"If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition into the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons," the general was quoted as saying.

According to the Journal, he said Chinese territory includes the country's warships and aircraft.

"If the Americans are determined to interfere... we will be determined to respond, and we Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all cities east of Xi'an," a major city in central China, Zhu said.

"Of course, the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds of, or two hundreds of, (or) even more cities will be destroyed by the Chinese."

The general said his comments were "my assessment, not the policy of the government," the Journal said.

Zhu's comments could add to tensions with Washington at a time when the United States is concerned about China's military buildup and critics of Beijing are opposing the proposed takeover of the oil and gas company Unocal Corp. by a Chinese state-controlled firm.

Witnesses at congressional hearings in Washington this week criticised the bid by Hong Kong-based CNOOC Ltd. as a strategic effort by China to gain control of foreign energy supplies.

China has a "no first strike" nuclear policy, but according to the Journal, Zhu said he believed that applied to non-nuclear powers and could be changed.

The general said China has no intention of getting into an arms race with the United States, noting the experience of the former Soviet Union as evidence of the futility of doing so, the report said.

Nuclear missile silos are constructed to withstand nuclear blasts, just like NORAD in the Cheyenne mountains.

It's dangerous to go on living all right. What with getting into 2 ton fuel filled bombs that go 70 on the freeway with other 2 ton fuel filled bombs, breathing toxic air, eating cholestrol and nitrates, STDs and cancer. I say we all stop right now, esp knowing that China, North Korea, Russia and the US all have enough nuclear power to blow us all off the planet at any time. Not to mention terrorists and their supposed dirty bombs, small pox and other weapons of mass destruction. *shakes head*

That is kinda scary though.

Also, it is important to note that everyone thought the US and the USSR were going to nuke each other off the face of the earth, but it never happened. And when they discovered that asteroids sometimes hit the earth, people thought it was certain that another one would hit any day. But it hasn't happened yet. That's not to say that things like the Tsunami will not happen. They will. Along with earthquakes, etc... But the human race seems to be pretty good at chugging along...

But war and disease will get more common, the more crowded this planet becomes.
Africa is always the testing ground, because it is more crowded there, with less resources.
So you tend to get more diseases, more genocides, more war, etc... So as the population
of the world increases, expect to see more war, more disease, more conflict...

But you still gotta keep chugging along.
It's the only life you've got.

Seriously though...relax..re-read the response from Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu...a guy so clearly behind on the current state of his own fucking military he'll probably be removed from his position within a year.

Really now there Zhu? Cause last I checked modern nukes (especilly those crafty american ones) can wipe out whatever they fucking well please from Sub's off your coast alone. This is not even calling in black project aircraft and weaponry...let alone how this leaves out the the current state of the Chinese Military, while a serious threat and cause for alarm has a few key issues in keeping itself mobile outside its sphere of operations. Added to this is the fact much of their technology and funding comes from western interests...

In all truth Walmart is a much more serious threat to China than the U.S. is at the moment...they have a much stronger pull on Chinese government and ecenomics than is being said or reported on.

Taiwan has and always will be a thorn in China's side but it's vastly overhyped as a flashpoint and has its own serious issues that may make it fall under Chinese control as a way of survival more than anything.

The chinese really don't want to go there. (But as an interesting Aside, the US Air Force recently moved (Permenently) some of it's B2 Bombers, to the Formerly mothballed Andersen Air Force Base on Guam.

The Chinese Wouldn't know what's going on until the silos are already gone.

Nuclear weapons are crude, and we have more, but really, all this has done is made it so that any of those Missles that were pointed away from Russia after the Cold War ended..... How much you want to bet they're default aimed at China now instead?

Yeah cause that;s the best course of action...invade the part of the states that leads you through Canada...the U.N. will LOVE that plan...plus Alaska is it's own danger...not the kinda enviornment you want to move ANY kind of military force through...brutal climate.

Added to that is the fact you're in a giant killbox and in range of all North American defense systems...

Though you'd have to be able to even GET there in a manner that won't tip off the entire Pacific Fleet...
