James Dean reached his definition of success
50 years after his death, he's still honored, celebrated
Fifty years ago today, a promising actor died, and a legend was born.
James Dean's family, friends, classmates and fans remember him today in their own ways, a half century after a traffic crash near Cholame, Calif., took his life.
Some remember his talent. Some remember his good humor and hijinks. Some remember his kindness and down-to-earth nature. Some remember how they first reacted to the characters he played in his three major movies, Rebel Without a Cause, East of Edenand Giant.
But he is definitely remembered. Especially here in the county that gave him life, gave him love as he grew up and, after his death, gave him his final resting place.
Last weekend, as for the three preceding decades, Dean was celebrated through events in Fairmount and Gas City.
Today, he is honored. Special ceremonies in Fairmount, ending at his Park Cemetery gravesite, will pay homage to the small-town young man with the large talent and enormous future that was cut off too soon.
We can only imagine what kind of career Dean would have had as an actor and probably director as well. How many Oscars might he have won? What kind of roles would he have played as an actor, and what kind of movies would he have made as a director? Would he have discovered new talent?
We'll never know. What we know is that James Dean intrigues so many with the glimpse of talent he had time to share on the screen.
He lived for 24 years and made three major films. Before that, he was in about two dozen little-remembered and mostly lost live television shows and plays.
But 50 years later, so many people all over the world still remember him and still care about him.
"I think there is only one form of greatness for man," James Dean said. "If a man can bridge the gap between life and death. I mean, if he can live on after he has died, then maybe he was a great man. To me the only success, the only greatness, is immortality."
James Dean, for millions, has bridged the gap between life and death. He has achieved his definition of success.
