Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
A friend of mind from school is preparing an interdisciplinary course syllabus on juvenile delinquency and she needs media representations. Here is what she has so far:
The Warriors
The Outsiders
Rebel Without a Cause
Elephant
Boyz 'n the Hood
Menace II Society
Pretty Baby
These are all movies, but she would also welcome fiction or popular media i.e. music videos, news, Dateline specials, etc.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
she can always try to track down that MTV documentary called Scared for Life? i think thats what its called. It's about kids who think they are all badass and put into prison to see what life is like there and the school of hard knocks sets in and scares the shit out of them to set em straight.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
What about Clockwork Orange?

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
Do you remember those kids that shot the bums with paint-ball guns? That footage is wicked, and a perfect example of delinquency if you ask me.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
there was a movie that came out a while ago called 'Fresh' about a 9 yearold growing up in the drug trade in harlem... sam jackson, and giacarlo esposito are in it. amazing movie.
'clockers' to a much lesser extent.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
The Wanderers...waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than The Outsiders.
American Me
Blood in Blood Out
and the short films of The Little Rascals...laugh all you want but those kids knew how to run a racket :P
-
Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
"American Me" is a really good movie that many people don't know about...
More about gang life than juvenile delinquency, but it has good scenes
of how his gang life started as a kid...
But "Thirteen" is something they should really put on their list to watch,
if they are trying to do a class about the subject. That's all the movie is
about. 13 year olds out of control...

Really? I've yet to run into anyone who hasn't seen that film. The story behind the film is just as intense...most of that cast is dead...and not by natural causes.

I always mention it to people as one of the movies I can always enjoy watching. Shawshank Redemption is another movie I never get tired of. The Godfather also... But when I mention it to people, most of them have never heard of it. I try to turn people on to it, because it's good shit.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
the book 'Go Ask Alice'(anonymous author) is an actual diary of a teenage girl who got caught up in drugs
Bad Girl: the confessions of a teenage diliquent by Abigail Vona
-
Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
Book wise...
The Sopranos by Alan Warner. It has ZERO to do with the HBO Television Series...
I liked it so much it's on the list of stuff to be buried with me.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
Almost forgot... "If..." and early Malcolm McDowell film that pretty much tosses all that modern violence bullshit about events like Columbine out the window.
It's an important film that is probably the closest to capturing that type of Teen Boy who's had it with everything and willing to squeeze a trigger to get his point across. It's creppier now of course since the ending to this film is no longer fantasy by any means...nor is the main character. Sad this film is so hard to find, see, and learn from.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
Monster : Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member, The (Paperback) This was a pretty good book. The Black Nationalism rhetoric is a little trite but the story itself is pretty scary.
My Bloody Life: The Making of a Latin King (Illinois) (Paperback) This is another one that is really good.
As far as gangster life goes those are two good books for a look. There were some really good I think it was HBO documentaries years ago as well I'll poke around and see what I can find.
I have quite a fascination with gang life so I'm sure I'll pull more titles out of my butt.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
Tell her to go on the Blue Blood message board and read some of these posts. I mean, come on, I think we have all read some pretty intense stuff here.

'go ask alice' is a well know anti-drug propaganda hoax... it's hysterical, the book ends with the girl deciding the clean up her act after pretty much doing everything a dumb teen girl could do... and then there's a note from the publisher saying that one week after getting out of detox 'alice' O.D.'ed...
...hokey shit like that is what kept my friends and I doing drugs... until I got bored...

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
the problem is alot of the movies you guys have posted actually GLORIFY juvenille delinquency rather than inform. want a good movie to show?
scared straight. very good film to watch or she could always take em on a field trip to an actual prison. some prisons still dot hose kinds of things.

You make a valid point. In studying such matters, you have to be honest about both the appeal and tragedy of juvenile delinquency.

Re: Help a friend of mine teach juvenile delinquency please
Maybe a little bit.
But most of these movies are accurate portrayals of the pitfalls.
Something like "The Warriors" might glorify it, but movies like Requiem for a Dream
show pretty clearly that there is a really bad downside.
