I thought about this as I was reading something funny-- Uncle Patrick's Advice to Children Not entirely PC, but funny if you don't take it seriously ;). So what advice would you give to a younger generation (funny or otherwise)?

Now what I cannot stand is this "low carb" thing. Cutting extraneous carbohydrates from the diet is one thing. I believe you made a very valid point on diet. I was a vegetarian for three years and found myself getting more ill, headaches and suffering from a lot of exhaustion. A family memberexperienced the same thing with a very vegetarian diet. We both have since gone back to meat and I instantly lost 10 pounds and am better able to manager my weight, I have found. I was a 145 pound meat eater who over a very short span became a nearly 200 pound vegetarian. I had a lot of behaviour problems as a vegetarian (not vegan) and much of that is now under control.
Ironically, my father who was having very similiar problems as you describe above was very successful with leaning to a more vegetarian diet.
I think it's important to listen to the "messages" of the body and pay attention to our reactions when we eat. Of course, eating to excess is bad for everyone in every situation, but many times I have found I solve a lot of physical issues with a simple change in diet. I have a lot less nightmares now, that's for sure.
Weeell, I have been studying that particular subject in dpeth since the eighth grade, almost 10 years now. :p But I don't think I'll go there today.Quote:

I don't get it either. Listening to your body should be natural. You know by signs your body gives you that you need to go to the bathroom, that you're sick, that you've damaged your body in some way, why do people refuse to listen to what they're body needs to stay healthy? I've never understood it.

People are different in most cases, which means that no Diet would be Perfect for EVERYBODY! It may suit some people perfectly, or maybe for an individual.
Well, when you go through a lot of physical hardship, it's almost like your body teaches you. With me, doing the "there and back again" with vegetarianism really makes me feel for those folks. I'd much rather discuss their viewpoints than a bunch of people who talk like rightwing gun-nuts and criticize someone for thinking "beyond the bun." The ex-wife's Dad learned the hard way at sixty-something, from his doctor: "When your body gets sick after eating all the meat you do, it's telling you: stop eating meat!"Quote:

Moderation is the key to a good diet though. I never agreed with the whole Vegan thing cause for yours truly it just never felt right. However I know many who are hardline vegetarians and fully agree it works for some people...but I hassle them none the same just as they do me about my passion for dead animal. It's all in good fun though. But one can't make it a daily thing...gotta pace one self. I've been vegetarian for a few months at a time, twice in my life. Although for others vegetarianism makes them healthier, for me, it most likely made me more anemic. I find that when I'm on a meat diet I'm not as tired, spiritless, or sleepy. I feel more vibrant when I eat meat. But that's just me.
What I really can't stand are those people who look down on you, get grossed out, or get self-righteous that I eat meat. What business is it of theirs? Different strokes for different folks. :)
Wish I did, but it's so hot where I'm at it would spoil before it gets to the car. There is another reason to visit Vegas I guess, for that supermarket thing, anyway.Quote:

and like i learned from my grandfather, always look out for the underdog. you can really help some people out immensely, even past junior goddamn high, mainly because most people stay stuck in junior high mentally.
and that reminds me, i need to call my father in a few days... august 20th'll be 10 years since said granddad passed away... and my birthday's the 23rd, so that had made my 10th birthday pretty much the worst ever.
Advice i would give....
Remember, we weren't always like this. We were like you once, too. Don't let this happen to you.
Don't be stupid. If you aren't sure how to go about this, you have already failed.
You can't help how you feel, but you can help how you behave.
Other people aren't just a virus in shoes, they feel, just like you. So don't be a dick.
You will fail.
You will dissappoint yourself, and others.
You will learn to work and you will learn to suffer in silence. And you will learn to want to work.
You will learn that life is about repetition interspersed with stress.
You will learn to hate memory and love tomorrow, because something nice might happen for a change.
You will become cold to the pains of relationships and die away from wanting to love. After a time, you will realize that there's a reason why you cared enough to go so cold, and you will learn to feel good about love again.
You will learn that this isn't the only, not maybe the best, nor the last relationship you will have.
You will forget the things you like and remember the things you hate.
Your hopes and dreams will remain unfulfilled. You will become used to it.
Life will not be fair. You will not get points for trying.
Get ready. It's a whole sack of bullshit and you'll see all these bad things come quick enough.
I'll be nice, though. I'll let you find out about the good things yourself.
And you'll damn well learn to appreciate them.
Just because you like something NOW doesn't mean it'll be the same in ten years. Preferences aren't set in stone.
As an addendum to that: it IS entirely possible to learn to like something you hate. It's not pleasant when you start, but if you want any happiness out of life you're going to have to get at least passable in that skill.
If you try to kill yourself, do it in a way that makes people go "HOLY FUCK! COOL!"
Learn when it's OK to compromise. On certain things, the most honorable and satisfying thing to do is to stick to your guns. On others, it's wiser and smarter to learn when to just shut up and deal. The trick is learning when is OK to do what. Standing your ground when your three-week-old significant other begins threatening to leave you if you don't become a vegetarian/stop being a vegetarian is just fine. Standing your ground when someone's pointing a gun at your face because you don't believe in lying is not.
Remember: if you like it and everyone else doesn't, it's a fetish. Enjoy.
Learn empathy. Whether you learn it to be able to manipulate people better or understand more, become aware of other people's feelings. Oftentimes, especially in the twisty horrid world of socializing, people will not say what they feel or deliberately lie just because they want the situation to feel more comfortable. This doesn't mean they're bad people, but these little mistruths will ALWAYS lead to danger later. Learn to read people. It'll never steer you wrong.
Try to recognize the difference between paranoia and prudence.
There is no such thing as unconditional love. All the ridiculous romantic notions people are brought up on are all 100% false. No knight in shining armor will sweep you up out of nowhere, and you will not be able to get a total monsterhot supermodel girlfriend without making any sort of personal compromise. You do not 'deserve' a hot mate, nor are you likely to get one, so toss that notion out right now. The most worthwhile people are often ugly, or hell, PLAIN. Don't ignore people because they don't hold up to your physical standards.
Be honest with yourself. Anything else leads to heartbreak.
Nothing's the end until you're dead. Just because something feels absolutely intolerably bad right now doesn't mean you're not going to run into something worse down the line. The person who just left you is NOT the only person who ever loved you and ever will. The job that just turned you down is NOT the best opportunity that will ever present itself to you. It might feel like it now, but every self-indulgent painful justification you're weaving around yourself is just that - a justification for feeling bad. Acknowledge loss, feel like shit, but don't lose perspective.
Pain doesn't have to scar. It's OK to feel bad, and then let it go.
The most important of all: do what you want, don't be a dick.
And finally, be nice to my grave. If you're going to have sex on top of it, mind you clean up afterwards so the next people don't have to sit in your goo.
You know, a lot of people say live every day as if it was your last. If you really think about it for most people this would just mean sitting around feeling sorry for themselves. I say live every day as if it were your first.
