COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - A double murderer was put to death in Ohio on Tuesday but not until after one of his veins had collapsed, causing the condemned man to sit up and tell his executioners, "It's not working," officials said.
The Ohio Department of Corrections said Joseph Clark, 57, was pronounced dead at 11:26 a.m. EDT (4:26 p.m. British Time) following an injection of lethal chemicals at the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville.
Spokeswoman Andrea Dean said the execution was delayed about 90 minutes because technicians had trouble initially finding a site in Clark's arm for the intravenous line carrying the chemicals.
Then shortly after the poisons were supposed to have been pumping into his body, she said, he sat up saying, "It's not working. It's not working."
Officials determined that a vein had collapsed. Curtains were closed to block witnesses' view until technicians found a vein in his other arm. They were then parted to reveal him dying, witnesses said.
Ohio has used lethal injection repeatedly without similar problems, but this method of execution, used in all but one of the 38 U.S. states that impose capital punishment, is under legal attack. The U.S. Supreme Court has a challenge before it from Florida claiming that it causes undue pain, while the matter is also before a court in California.
The method involves three separate drugs: the first renders the victim unconscious, the second stops all muscle movement except the heart and the third stops the heart, causing death.
Clark was given a meal of his request on Monday, consisting of shrimp, steak, chicken wings, fries, rolls with butter, cherry pie and a soft drink.
Just before the execution process started the first time Clark made a final statement apologising to his victims' families and saying "Today my life is being taken because of drugs. If you live by the sword you die by the sword."
On January 13, 1984, Clark shot Marine reservist and father of two David Manning and stole $65 (35.4 pounds) from the gas station where Manning was working.
The murder came during an eight-day crime spree in which Clark also murdered another man, student Donald Harris, and wounded a third man during an attempted robbery.
Harris was filling in for a friend at a convenience store when Clark entered and demanded the contents of the store's safe. Harris said he did not know the safe's combination, and was shot in the back of the head.
Clark later attempted to rob a man at an automated teller machine, the two struggled, and the victim was wounded twice. A witness saw the attack and noted the licence plate number on Clark's car.
After he was arrested, Clark tried to hang himself in his jail cell, and confessed to the murders while recovering in a hospital. He was sentenced to death for Manning's murder.
Clark said he robbed to support a drug habit.
"Neither the parole board nor I are persuaded by Mr. Clark's attempt to explain away Mr. Manning's murder," Gov. Robert Taft said in refusing clemency last week.
Taft said Clark's "well established prior criminal conduct, both as a juvenile and as an adult, signifies a propensity for violent behaviour."
Clark was the 21st person to be executed in Ohio since the state resumed carrying out the death penalty in 1999, and the 1,021st inmate executed in the United States since capital punishment resumed in 1976.

... so we didn't bother to do anything about it till now, because even though we've killed 2,000 people for murder, we still stand by our claim that the system works.
In a related news story... every lawmaker in the country simultaniously died of acute asphixiation. the surgeon general ruled having your head up your ass causes a fatal lack of oxygen to the brain.

Re: don't do drugs Ohio man tells executioners "It's not working"
the most perverse thing for me is the fact that some twisted cunts can go and enjoy watching somebody else being killed.
You call it closure; i call it fucking primitive apeshit.

Re: don't do drugs Ohio man tells executioners "It's not working"
true, rock wolf, I didn't recall the exact number, so I rounded up.. just give it some time and it will be acurate. While I can understand your response BC, I just don't see any point in it. You call that justice? the fact is that capital punishment has done NOTHING to stop people from murdering each other, and it seems to me that whatever we do after the fact is too little too late and we just do it to appease opurselves and say that we did something about it.

Re: don't do drugs Ohio man tells executioners "It's not working"
actually about 80% of people in prisons are there for non-violent drug offenses. say what you want about it, but when smoking a joint gets you more time than molesting a kid, there's something wrong with the prison system.
-
Re: don't do drugs Ohio man tells executioners "It's not working"
I just wanted to point that out to the last reply. I know that we've had many discussions about the prison system and the death penalty before and you guys have probably heard everything I have to say about it twice.

Re: don't do drugs Ohio man tells executioners "It's not working"
yeah, but it doesn't matter. what it all comes down to is that a handful of people make extravagant amounts of money, which allows them to live like kings, literally, at the expense of everything else on the planet, and they don't care if after they die, life will be unbearable for everyone else. The only reason that they even have the slightest respect for each other, is because they are aware that they have to work together to dupe everyone. This by no means entails that they wouldn't stab their own grandma for a buck, but just that they would be careful to not lose their business with the knife makers.
But not to place all the blame on them, the blame rests soley on people like you and me. what allows them to do these things are the rest of us giving them the OK, because we want to live exactly the same way, even though doing so will ensure that we will never be able to. That's how it works, one person can only make a million dollars if a million other people are only making one dollar.
The point of all this is that the people that make laws and build prisons don't care if we never stop another crime. they can afford to live far away from anyone who would steal (actually, ironically, they steal more then anyone else, but they don't see it that way. firing 300,000 workers, making pay offs and undercuts that cost tax payers billions, taking money from thier employees retirement plans, this isn't "stealing" to them, it's called "profit") they can afford to hire private armies to ensure that they are untouchable in person or in asset. But the rest of us care about crime, we don't want to be murdered robbed and assaulted in the streets... so they say"next year if we just had more funding then we'd be able to solve that problem." they say that about everything.
meanwhile 1,021 murderers are out there murdering and we're spending thousands of dollars on each one for a non-lethal injection.

give us around 100 years. at that point the earth will be unliveable for most species. sadly this will mean the end of many amazing and wonderful creatures that may never develop again. but rest assured, the world will survive and in time it will renew itself.

Re: don't do drugs Ohio man tells executioners "It's not working"
ya start over be tits with me ,, Humm Ive seen Morning Glory POV ,,, agree abit too , drugs should be legal, crime would drop,, some not all ,a revamp of certain laws would help,, abeit ,murder is murder,, the topic was bout the fyckered up in jection system they use now ,and how a 15 min death penaltie took too long , 1 1/2 hrs too long ,,painless my ass,the man did a crime ,yes ,, they changed the laws here ,and gave him death ,>im imho life was just fine ,as said in other post ,,,they had probs with peeps being awake while to shyt that kills ya was injected,,thats is pain and suffering ,as one prsion and a Texas Prossacute put it ,they did a murder if they suffere so what ,,im sure there victims suffered much more than that ,,my point if yer gonna kill ,,make it pain less ,and qwik wtf ,,,1 hr is a hour too long ,,

I dont either really, but i still dont think that executng people is a good idea, besides the fact that it costs more that putting them in jail for the rest of their lives, killing a murderer just takes you down to thier level, and i honestly dont like being a part of a government that murders people.

Ummm, How does it cost more, when we are paying for someone to sit on their ass for 25 years. It is cheaper to "off" someone a year or after they sentenced then to feed them, bath them, and Babysit them for longer.

Court costs and litigation mostly, look it up.

Re: don't do drugs Ohio man tells executioners "It's not working"
Yes, but you can't appeal if you are dead. The costs would go down, if they just took care of thnigs in a timely matter

yes but you cant deny a potentially innocent person thier right to an appeal, and the appeals are why the people sit on death row for so long anyways.

Aww, but you can.. Mwahahahahahahaha
(I am conceding, only because I have a lot of work, and really don't like debating in message boards... I do enough of that in RL... )
