Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
May 4, 9:49 AM (ET)
BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian builders who drank their way to the bottom of a huge barrel of rum while renovating a house got a nasty surprise when a pickled corpse tumbled out of the empty barrel, a police magazine website reported.
According to online magazine www.zsaru.hu, workers in Szeged in the south of Hungary tried to move the barrel after they had drained it, only to find it was surprisingly heavy and were shocked when the body of a naked man fell out.
The website said that the body of the man had been shipped back from Jamaica 20 years ago by his wife in the barrel of rum in order to avoid the cost and paperwork of an official return.
According to the website, workers said the rum in the 300-liter barrel had a "special taste" so they even decanted a few bottles of the liquor to take home.
The wife has since died and the man was buried in a proper grave.

hhmmmm... Cabin fever comes to my mind..
I guess you could say the guy was pickled..
If it would have been rolling down the hill and he fell out, would he have been RUM Over.
I could go on all day, but then you all would slap me till my nose was rumming with blood.

Further investigation led to the findings that the man has been well known for never being found in Hide & Seek

Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
am I the only one who thinks the fact that they drank 300 liters of rum is more amazing then a corpse in a barrel?

Well, it during the course of building a house. But, yeah, that is a lot of rum.
But I do have to agree with keiko and mmmcherry.

Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
I saw this post on another forum a few days ago. My response remains the same: that is one cheap ass wife.

While at work, this just hit me. How many liters of rum would the human body displace? So, they probably didn't get to drink 300 liters of rum.
Supposedly, this is the barrel, from the website. No photos of the corpse.

ok, here's my stab at it. I rounded down slightly for the conversion rates just to make them whole numbers that can be equally interchanged, so in other words, it's not exactly acurate, but it's pretty close. I also have not used any mathematics beyond grade school algebra in like 3 years, so I don't even know if I did this right, but this is the best I can do.
Let's say the body weighs 100 lbs. the guy has been dead for 20 years, and will have lost a considerable amount of weight, so that seems fair.
Let's assume the barrel is full of water and it is at full 300 liter capacity. ( I know that it is full of rum, but I don't know the density of rum, so i'm just going to use the scale of H20 to figure this out.)
First the conversion: 100 lbs equals about 40 kilograms (kg's) of weight. 300 liters equals about 30 cubic decameters (dm3) of space. Also 1L = 1 kg.
Density of Body:
D= 40 kg's (mass) divided by 30 dm3 (volume).
So the Density of the body is 1.3 kg's/dm3
Density of Water:
D= 300 kg's (m) divided by 30 dm3 (v).
So the Density of the water is 10kg's/dm3
If the body has a Density of 1.3..., and it is added to a water Density of 10..., then the difference( aka. the amount of water displaced from the barrel) would be 9.7...
Let's assume that ammount was then added to another barrel of the same capacity as the first one (but obviously empty), so that we can deteremine the exact weight of the displaced water.
It should look like this:
M= 9.7 kg's/dm3 (D) divided by 30 dm3 (V).
So the Mass (weight) of the displaced water is 0.3kg's.
Which converts as follows:
0.3kg's= 300g's= 0.8 L
So that's the solution, based on my calculations. Roughly 0.8 liters of water would be displaced from the barrel.

Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
a few problems with that. First off if i remmeber correctly achohol has a signifigantly different density that water (i belive it is lower) also regardless of weither or not the guy has been dead for 20 years hes been completely preserved and sealed up in that time so he would probably remian near the same weight (actually hed probably end up weighing more because his body would soak up the rum to a degree which would mean less rum in the barrell.
-
Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
it doesn't say that the body has been preserved. I'm really not sure of the absorbent abilty of a corpse...these are all factors that can be taken into account, but from my understanding, I don't think they are going to cause an overall signifigant change in displacement. it would seem to me that it would be a degreee no more then a liter or two at most. even at the highest possible ammount that I can think of which wouldn't even be remotely plausable, that still leaves 200 + liters that they consumed.
-
Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
the whole point of putting a body in a barrel of rum is to preserve it, this was actually a popular method of preserving sailors that died at sea and people still drank the liquor that the body was placed in. But all in all you are correct that it wouldnt make that much of a difference, also you arent factoring the density of the human body as a matter in fact im sure that a human body would displace more than .8 liters, thats pretty simple to find out just look at a 2 liter bottle of soda, a human body is considerably larger than that/

Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
haha. I told you im not that good at math.. anyway, where have you been man? this seems like the only thread I've seen you post on in forever?
-
Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
oh ive just been really busy lately, i do at least read the forum a few times a week but i havent felt compelled to post much.
-
Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
Oh and BTW it wasnt your math that was screwed up it was that you tried to figure the displacement with the mans weight instead of his body mass, which in humans is near impoosible to determine solely by weight because humans are made up of several materials, all of which have diferent densities.
-
Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
yaknow, the human body disposes of ALL bodily waste after it's dead.........
wonder if that was the special taste they were talking about.
-
Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
That is still pretty fucking disgusting. I'd have thrown up left, right and centre. No way I could keep anything in my stomach after that! Oh... and drinking that much first would probably make me a little sickly as well... especially considering I don't like rum...

Re: Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel
humm they Decanted a few bottles to take home it says ,,,watch out on E-bay for special 20 yrs old rum ,,with a special flavor to it ,,lol,,
