Mortality is Not Morbidity (Token Gothic Post)

As of 6/10/2006, I have been offered and accepted the cemetery plot next to my Grandfather. I do not consider this a morbid endeavor. It is rare to see a young man pictured alive at his own grave. In fact, this is exactly what this photo now represents. It is humbling to say the least. This is my grave.
To me, mortality is the !! to our existence. It is irrelevant whether one believes or believes not in an afterlife or reincarnation. This photo is a millisecond of time upon this mortal coil. Whereas home has summoned me back in recent months, it now beckons me eternally.

Make no mistake tho: As with Robert Frost, I have miles to go before I sleep.

why did you omit the photo, considering that it seemed to be the centerpeice of what you were talking about?

I understand the sentiment and I don't find it to be morbid. The fact that our culture goes so far to deny the reality of death is a staggering testimony to how much we don't understand the process of life.

But the whole ideas of cemetaries doesn't really fit well for me. Basically it's the Christian belief that a body should not be destroyed because then you won't be able to get into heaven at the end of the world, when god revives all the dead bodies. The body is placed in a casket so that it will be preserved from the moisture in the soil. They didn't really know that moisture and bacteria is what breaks down bodies, so they probably just did it because they think that dirt represents the earth which is evil and ungodly.

Actually, my grandfather was cremated. His ashes were scattered in several places. We kept some to create a permanent site. It will be the same for me.

PS. we should just mow down all the tombstones and a plant a garden over the corpses, it would be a much better use of space. I'm pretty confident that the people who knew me will remember me when I'm gone, and I think it's pretty arrogant for people to think that they should be known to the world forever.

That would be an unusual acceptance speech:1orglaugh . My grandma offered it to me via my mother. I just accepted over the phone. It is probably something me and my grandma will joke about. My family is just kind of like that.:1orglaugh :thumb:

It gives me a deep sense of inner peace. (I know some may find this silly) I may end up as the caretaker of this cemetery, ironically. My Grandparents' neighbor has ran it since his son passed away. He is aging and may need to pass the torch (by the time I go home). I understand why some consider such matters solipsistic, to me it is just a labor of love. I love the soil.:thumb:
