Yeah, this is pretty disgusting, i actually went to a place like this, only it was in america so it wasnt nearly as bad, but it was still pretty horrible. What do you guys think about this sort of thing?

Is that one of those wilderness survival camps fro "troubled teens"? I went to one of those way out in bumfuck montana. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. My parents pulled me out after 19 days.

uhh no, this is like a "school" in jamaica, its much much worse than the wilderness camps.

...i'm wondering what kind of effect this had on your relationship with your parents, and society?

considering what i kept under my pillow when i was a teen, it's a damn good thing i wasn't awakened at 4a by an 'escort team'...

Honestly? I was a total fucking nut case for a few months after my parents pulled me out. It took a long time for both of us(my parents and I) to rebuild trust with each other. We are extremely close to this day. I spent the next three years on probation as a ward of the state. My juvenile record is about a mile thick. I had a lot of problems growing up....... as far as society goes, I generally detest it, but I think I have done very well for myself. I'm happy with my life. I managed to make it through college, and actually have three degrees.... but I don't play the game completely, and I probably never will.

I should elaborate. I was talking about the original post and not what I went to. What I went to was bad enough, and I think parents should be more aware. I also think that they (wilderness survival programs like I went to) should be more honest with parents about what really happens out there. programs like the ones in the original post should be illegal. am I making more sense now? sorry, I have this uncanny knack for being vague sometimes.....

Well i still dont get along with my father (hes the one that sent me there) and im generally pissed at society for allowing this to happen, but the doctor says thats just a result of post traumatic stress disorder, who knows. all in all all the worst poart is, that i came out worse mentally than i came in.

It's worrying to note that the Jamaican place is a subsidiary of WWASPS (based in Utah) - which has seen many abuse claims raised against it's centers in the USA following suspicious deaths. Seems that they're taking a lesson from the CIA and exploiting offshore territories with less protective legal systems.

I can see the point of a residential program provided it respects dignity and most importantly it achieves something other than imprisonment - you can't teach 'self improvement' by forcing it on people, but you can influence through experiences (whilst Voltaire presumably didn't appreciate being made to sleep under a tarp and eat bugs, things like that really do change a person.. even if they don't know it at the time.) Just locking kids away like Gitmo Disney is an entirely different issue and would breed the wrong responses. The 'camp' might think it's making them behave, but 99% of the time they've simply learnt to pretend whatever is necessary for them to be let out - and that's going to carry on through their life.

Of course I sleep... I work nights so I'm usually asleep by sun up....... It just happens to be my day off........ besides, It's still way early for me. I went to bed at 8:30 yesterday morning.....

i ask because i was 'at risk' as a youngster, and my parents wiselychoose to keep me at home, and just deal with the bullshit. which i think saved everybody alot of grief. (it was recommended to them several times to send me away, basically for being a smart ass, and reading what i wanted instead of what i was told to... i didn't start using dope till later ;) ) (well, that and being ultraviolent.)

man after reading a shit load of articles, and trying out the "Observational Postition" or whatever they fuckin' called it, geezus fucking christ on a shiskabob...

i think i really hate the people who own those companies... i am wishing plauges on their families, and the children of their employees...

yeah, sometimes residential care facilities are needed, but fuck those places. (i got buddies who work in residential programs, they actually CARE about the kids they work with... it's tough for them to work in some of those places, even when it's well funded, and run ethically... ugh!)

i think the most horrible aspect of all that stuff i read was the emotion/brainwashing shit.

the constantly asking questions about what the kids are thinking, and punishing them for not revealing humiliating enough aspects of their psyches.

my standard response to that sort of prying was 'go eat shit' from about 2nd grade on.

I actually have some pretty strong viewsabout the parenting thing I do think brainwashing is a waste of energy when a good shot in the head will do of course brainwashing is still acceptable whereas a good beating isn't

I've only met a few people over the years who went to such things, but they were all pretty traumatized and no one I've met has ever said that it helped them. I know one guy whose parents told him two years later that he couldn't go to college because they'd spent his tuition on that forced march summer camp they sent him to. There's a good parenting choice. Not.

...I can't believe that the kids haven't been able to sue these places.

i don't care what kind of crap they have you sign, i would sue these people into starvation.
