Books/Genre you grew up on.

So as to not de-rail BC's thread further I decided to start a new thread :)


Let's see...Fantasy/Sci-Fi were the biggies. When I was very small it was all about fairy tales, and semi surreal childhood books (some of those had some pretty weird enviroments, the kind you'd look at and think about being in and feel uneasy haha).

Around Middleschool I found a dragonlance book, and read a few of those. I thought they where awesome and it was the first time I can remember wanting to read.

8th grade, found the Hobbit..read all of the lord of the rings. I was finished then :D...then Highschool came around...I've probally read maybe 200ish fantasy/sci-fi books now. From Forgotten realms, to dragonlance, to Warhammer Fantasy/Warhammer 40k, etc etc. Books rocks.

I also read a ton of the Dragonlance books. I got hooked on the first trilogy. I was really into gaming at that point. I got into Robotech books too.

oddly enough.. I was into the pulps... The Hardy Boys, Phillip Marlowe.. the crime fighting, trench-coat wearing, fog on the dock Serials

everything from Nancy Drew to Narnia when I was a little (including Encyclopedia Brown, the Hardy Boys and Hawkeye and Amy). Also ate my way through every book on the supernatural the libraries at my disposal had. By jr high it was DragonLance Forgotten Realms and Piers Anthony and Lillian Jackson Brawn. One day I'm gonna be a supernatural crimefighter.

Sadly, I've never actually read The Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Wait! I take that back. For three months I'd get 2 chapters or so of the Hobbit in a night. Cured my insomnia for a while. Good story, imo, terrible telling. I've eaten juicier paper towels. Which I believe might be why it lent itself so well to movies.

Ofcourse it was the usual suspects like Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Then, when I was around 13 it became Shadowrun. After that Philip K. Dick stepped on my literature-stage and others (Lem) soon followed. And yeah, I still love most of my childbooks even today around 15 years later.

I read a lot of non fiction as a kid. The Dictionary, encyclopedias, text books reference books. When I read fiction I really liked horror as a kid (surprise surprise) and various classical literature.

When I was public school I read a lot of Enid Blyton(british author) and other stuff like that, in high school if it was paperback it was good

Uh, probably . . . goosebumps . . . . yeah I'm a loser. oh & fear street. R.L. Stine. I was his bitch.

Now, I found Robert Cormier in like 9th grade and nwo he owns my soul though.

"the forgotten beasts of eld" by Patricia McKillip - got me hooked on fantasy

"the persian boy" - can't reread that enough

"black beauty" - ditto

like famous Vincent Maloy that was 7 years old, i grew up on books of Edgar alan poe, Oscar Wilde, Hans Anderson, Bram stoker and the rest of gothic novels of 19 century...
and also I read a lot and very different in subject books..
but most favorite is the above mentioned. :)

that's Pearl S. Buck, isn't it? I read that when I was a kid. My mom made sure I read all the classics when I was growing up. My favorites were Kidnapped, treasure island, count of monte cristo, little women, wind in the willows, alice in wonderland, I like all the classics still actually...... someone mentioned the children's book goodnight moon. I still have my copy of it. I've had it since I was four or five......... it was the only book I kept from when I was really young.

okay, back to packing..........

Read "Lizard Music" by D. Manus Pinkwater. Great out there book.

Wrinkle in Time was okay, Wind in the Door was better. Swiftly Tilting Planet more so. Many Waters was the wierdest of the bunch. L'Engle's a genius though. http://www.madeleinelengle.com/books/

hmmm never realized she'd been writing so long, my daughter used to read her stuff too

Ive read all the DRagonlance ,,,and Myth series.. when i was younger tho and i blame him.
my dad got me hooked on good old SCi-Fy, i meen theres just too many to list here ,just think all of the early stuff from " 70 and up ,but ive read alot of older stuff,
and of course my mom had me reading all the classic's Voltaire and Zombie_Fatale had mention , all very good reads..

Yay! someone who'll get it when I call some one a Klahd! Aahz is my hero...

Oh, I also recalled Tolkien and celtic legends - that also heavily impressed me when I was a kid.

One series was never enugh and if you guys knew hoe mouch of a book freak I was you'd understand. fantasy was my thing for the lontest, that and murder myseteries, I've been reading the murder mysteries since grade 4.
If I was bad as a kid my punishment was to have my books taken away. That's how much of a book dork I was.

judy blume...her books got me through my akward life
