Tesco condemned for selling pole dancing toy

Tesco has been forced to remove a pole-dancing kit from the toys and games section of its website after it was accused of "destroying children's innocence".

The Tesco Direct site advertises the kit with the words, "Unleash the sex kitten inside...simply extend the Peekaboo pole inside the tube, slip on the sexy tunes and away you go!

"Soon you'll be flaunting it to the world and earning a fortune in Peekaboo Dance Dollars".

The £49.97 kit comprises a chrome pole extendible to 8ft 6ins, a 'sexy dance garter' and a DVD demonstrating suggestive dance moves.

The kit, condemned as 'extremely dangerous' by family campaigners yesterday, was discovered by mother of two Karen Gallimore who was searching for Christmas gifts for her two daughters, Laura 10, and Sarah, 11.

Mrs Gallimore, 33, of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, said yesterday: "I'm no prude, but any children can go on there and see it. It's just not on."

Dr Adrian Rogers, of family campaigning group Family Focus said yesterday that the kit would "destroy children's lives".

He said: "Tesco is Britain's number one chain, this is extremely dangerous. It is an open invitation to turn the youngest children on to sexual behaviour....

$80 isn't the sort of price a 10-yr-old is going to be spending on a shopping website on their own. If they're given that kind of cash and no supervision on spending it or using the Web, I don't think the kids are the ones in the family that need talking to. 80 bucks buys a whole lotta porn way faster than buying a pole. You can't ban a product just because parents are stupid.

The tesco website groups all their games and novelties together, so there's stuff aimed at adults (which is where this was living) and stuff for different age groups. It's possibly not the best cataloging system, but it's normal for the Daily Mail newspaper to have a coronary at the thought of someone under the age of 25 being able to see the packaging on a dangerously deviant object such as a novelty pole, a bottle of beer or an irresponsibly sharp cactus.

Have to say though, that pole doesn't look up to the task in hand. Put an adult on a sectional sucker-cup creation like that and you're looking at some great personal injury compensation claims!

The sex shop I work has this lovely item and I wouldn't sell it to some one I hate. Its cheap, and mostly will break if you try any of the cooler poll moves on it. Dumb that parents are so upset. If you flip through say spencer's gifts website you will find this toy. It is not a kids toy. It is not going to destroy any children.

In a rational wold, you know the kind of world I dream about, the parent would have called the company and politely said, "hey, your sex toy is in the same section of the website and Blues Clues, could you move it to another section?" and this could have been resolved without parlement or the press. But that world is only a dream.

Free World, Free Enterprise, Free to not shop there... Can't tell others not to, but i know my little girl won't be getting one of those for christmas
