You're talking about "Mad World" - though some of your lyrics are off.
Originally written and released by Tears For Fears in 82, made famous outside the UK by Gary Jules in 2001 (which is the version used in the commercial you heard). I prefer the original, but then I'm old enough to have used cellphones with separate batteries.
