Rant: Sloppy Roomies

Ok..so its time for me to rant.

I have a roommate. Before he was a roommate he was one, he was a friend. Good friend in fact. But he wanted out of IL, and so did we at the time..so we all packed up and ended up here in Atlanta.

For the first 4 months he didnt have a job. He wasnt even looking. He was just playing Xbox all day and night. We bought all his food and smokes (if we didnt he took ours anyways, which made me just buy more in the long run)
He finally got a job..actually 2! Yay!
He got fired after a month from one job because he was late. He only worked it for 4 hours a day..and on top of that all he had to do was play with toys! He got fired from a job where you play with toys! How!?

Anyways, he still has his other job (thank god) and he gives us about 500 a month. For rent, bills, everything.

Problem is, is our rent is 1010 a month, plus 80$ cable/net bill, + 100$ electricity + $50 for gas.

So we end up paying around $740 - $800 a month. He pays around $500.
Ive had to resort to finding a 2nd and third job to try and make ends meet, but its limited as i dont have a car.

Anyways, the real rant is that he is extremely lazy. I often have to wake him to get to work, as he's already on his last warning from being late 4 times in a row (an hour a piece)
He over stuffs the trashcan without taking the trash out. And if its too full, he leaves trash on top of the can.
He leaves his dirty socks next to the computer, and at last count there were 19 empty toilet paper rolls laying in his bathroom.
I built a small tower out of the them to try and hint to him "hey! clean up!"
He leaves dishes in the sink, even if the washer is empty. And if the washer is clean and full he wont empty it, but just take things out until someone else will.

He cleaned out his car one day and left it all on my desk in the garage. Instead of paying his part of rent for one month he decided to buy video games he has beaten already and get stuff for his car, which is a good reason why we are in debt right now)

When we went to CA in Aug. and Florida last month, when we came back the house was destroyed, not because of parties , but because he doesnt clean anything so trash built up and up and up. and smelled really bad.

Does anybody have any suggestions?! He wont listen to mine.

Man, that makes me pretty thankful for my current roomies.

If this person is really your friend, he shouldn't be putting you through so much stress, let alone debt. That's just wrong. He is just using you.
Give him an altimadum.

Seriously, you must be one of the nicest people in the world if you've been putting up with this that long. I have the same fears when I move, of a possible friend from down here moving in. Fact is you have to be a hardballer and give them an altimadum (like Lady Alias stated).

Get a damn job, pay the rent, and stop acting like a grown up child. Or get the hell out of my house.

-edit- Seriously, reading that is making me have a mini-rant. You know what? Don't give him a chance..kick the bastard out. He pays no money and destroys your home.

i already have. i told him to shape up or ship out. and he doesnt seem phazed by it. in fact im lucky we have a understanding landlord who is writing a faux letter to me (since im the lease holder) about being late on rent and that the landlord can come in and relinquish items as debt owed. but its just to scare him into going "hey the house is getting messy, and you still owe me $500 in back rent"

i hope at least that works a little :|

I'm gonna go on a limb and say you're rather submissive. Have any agressive scary men/woman who would go after him? That or, maybe the police can evict him?

that wont phaze him either. he was arrested a few months back for having stolen property and he shrugged it off lol. so seriously, its bad man.
and they only arrested him by accident as they were looking for somebody ELSE that USED to live here, and they ran his plates and up popped him for stolen stuff long time ago. he said " if they havent sent any court stuff, then im not responsible if i dont show" sorta thing... but he should call and ask, just in case it got lost or something and missed court by accident, then he'd be in real deep shit.

and its not that im submissive..i just dont like confrontation. im an easy laid back kinda guy that likes when things go smoothly.

I totally feel ya man, but there comes to a point when you gotta look at that scale. Is the gain really more then the cost? He trashes your house apparently, has you in debt, and does not pay rent.

He has to change or you gotta kick him out for your own sake.

I mean its easy for me to say that since I don't know your relationship with the guy but still..sometimes ya gotta look out for mr #1

but he does pay rent/bills... just not enough. getting a second job isnt a option for him as ive asked numerous times how he could get extra income.

his idea: play online poker tourneys and try and win. His last place he made: 8000 something out of 10,000. you need to be in top 25 to get $20 bucks or more. Yea..it aint happenin.

I had the same problem with a friend who became a room-mate. You don't want to lose the friendship, by being an asshole. So my answer is to just move out, and get a new place with someone more reliable. That way you can still be friends with this guy, and someone else will have to deal with his behavior, or perhaps no one will, and he will have to change his ways. But people like that often never change. They learned long ago, that they always manage to survive. If he has an X-box, and enough money for food, then he will just keep crashing at people's places, and he will always have the basics. Some people won't change their behavior until they have burned all their bridges, and are out on the street with nothing. Because 99% of the time, they will find someone to take them in. And so they can just keep slacking off, and moving on to the next person who has sympathy for them, or is willing to take his minimal rent money... But you need to think about what is best for you, and it seems like getting a cleaner room-mate is a really good idea. It does not mean you can't be friendly with this guy in the future. Just don't live with him. If you do have to kick him out, then do it nicely, and don't be a jerk about it. It's better to do it when you are not pissed off. Just tell him you would rather rent his room to someone else, because he is just too messy. That you will give him time to get a new place, but that in two months, he has to be out... Or perhaps use the rent as an excuse. Tell him that if he does not pay the full rent, you will have to get someone who can. Tell him it is nothing personal, but you can't let yourself get kicked out for not having rent, or having it mess up your credit. So if he can't pay the full amount, that you need to get someone else...

err....im like the messiest person in the whole world, I just dont get roommates, noone should have to put up with my filth

i'd ban the Gerbil personally. one afternoon while he's out -- or heck even if he's absorbed in his gaming -- move all his stuff out to the curb. This is especially effective on trash day. :D

And hey, maybe you oucld use new roomies. Have room for two more cats?

Instead of talking about it you should start leaving a bunch of passive-aggressive notes around the house explaining your grievances. :-)

Try locking up the Xbox or hide the discs... That might work. Might make him think about things.

Personally, with that level of disrespect and filthiness, I'd just kick him out. Someone so unconcerned with showing even basic consideration doesn't deserve any in return.

People like that really don't tend to change, and they definitely won't change as long as they get to keep doing what they want. You can bitch at him all you want, but as long as he can come back to a roof over his head and play his games, what you say doesn't really sink in.

lock up the xbox or pretend you got busted into and had it stolen? hmmmm... then tell him it was the only thing that got ripped off cause they couldnt find anything else to steal in all the junk.

Ive been roommates with my current ones several times before so I've already seen the best and the worst of it. Odds are the biggest reason that he is so lazy is because you let him be. I know each situation is different but sounds like you really need to get on his case about everything and if he can't apply some effort maybe you should just give him the boot.

me and my 5 flatmates had a serious problem with our 6th housemate about a month ago. we received seperate phone calls about the fact that he owed the landlord £1,400 in rent (all the rent since our move in date) and were subsequently about to be sued and the money taken from our deposits all because the landlord was unable to contact the problem flatmate.

He could not reach him on his own mobile, through letters to his parents house or phone calls to his parents. All contact was ignored.

Our flatmate too was very untidy, but it was not until after his departure that we became aware that his bedroom smelt VERY strongly of urine and found dirty plates and glasses stacked in both his wardrobe AND chest of drawers.

Since we became aware of this problem the flatmate i question has not returned to our house or contacted the landlord regarding rent. We too are lucky to have a lenient landlord, he has since cancelled his plan to take money from us and instead has got a solicitor involved and has changed the locks on the flatmate's door so he cannot claim any of his possessions until the money is paid.

This is the only way we have been able to rectify the situation, through legal action. So i completely agree with getting your landlord to write a threatening letter, perhaps even hinting toward possible eviction.

I must say this is a very raw subject to me and my flatmates and we sympathise with anyone else having to tolerate those who do not understand the respecting of other's space (regarding cleanliness) or the importance of rent and the seriousness of debt.
