I now have a family of possums living behind my shed. I don't mind them, but I'd rather not have the rodents of unusual size figuring out how to become house pets. Fairly sure they carry rabies too. Anyway, how the hell do I chase them off? I'm pretty sure the Wildlife center is still laughing at the last call I made to them, so I'm putting it off as a last resort.

well honestly id rather have a bear than a possum for a pet... but i think both are pretty dangerous hehe... wildlife control would be my best bet, they showed my mom how to prevent skunks from burrowing under our shed/hot tub/etc... by putting up metal mesh fencing around the bottom edges of the shed and stuff, a little bit under the ground so they couldnt just dig underneath the fence heh... worked for skunks, might work for possums, try it out :D
and be really careful about letting any pet cats or small dogs out, cause possums can be vicious fuckers!!
(and dont they spray like skunks? i heard that somewhere... im not 100% sure though)
they reproduce real fast

last night, mom's boyfriend (big burly trucker, just for a visual) took a rake, went outside, and began yelling at the shed. the possum came waddling out making this weird snarl type noise. mom's boyfriend whimpered like a puppy, dropped the rake and ran out the back yard. mom called animal control. they're coming over tomorrow.
possums are native in Australia
opossums are in the US
and they're not rodents they're marsupials.
I think they're totally cute, I'd do the Christian thing too like Toe Cutter said :P

I lived on hornby island for a while, at one time someone thought it would be neat to bring pair to the island, now they have such a problem that they have anual contests to see who can kill the most cause they have that much of a problem with them and they hardly put a dent in the population
they make good eating too

ps. ive heard possum is greasy... is it? i dont know if i could ever bring myself to eat possum... all i would be able to think is "omg rabies, city possum diseases... no no no!"
