Wow, that's totally awful. I doubt it was painless.

yeah, you can expect at least a few really awful seconds, but it should be quick if they were completly engulfed. as long as your brain doesn't melt, with that kind of flash-burn you could survive for a time depending on the conditions. I would assume that molten metal would cause instant incineration, but the article said that they were able to recover the bodies afterwards. eh, how gruesome.
