Polish Ombudsman Backs Off Tinky Winky Gay Probe

(Warsaw) A day after she received international scorn for telling a Polish publication she had asked for a report on whether Tinky Winky and other Teletubbies are promoting homosexuality to children, the country's ombudsman for children is backing down.

Ewa Sowinska had told a popular Polish magazine said she was concerned the popular show promoted homosexuality to unsuspecting minors. "I noticed that he has a purse..." Sowinska told a weekly paper.

Her remarks were immediately likened to those several years ago of the late US evangelist Jerry Falwell who accused Tinky Winky of being gay because he carried a purse.

Sowinska's remarks were picked up by newspapers around the world sparking ridicule.

Tuesday she was backpedaling.

Although Winky posted a $100,000 bond yesterday, today he really is a free man. All charges have been dropped.:1orglaugh :thumb:

I'm kind of surprised this didn't get picked up when Jerry Falwell tried it here. Picked up as in more of the world. I'm glad it's been settled though what an absurd thing to argue over in the political arena.

Does anyone even watch the Teletubbies any more?

I mean sure the first season was good, but they must have got new writers cause they really have lost the plot lately.




On a more serious note, puppets and fictional characters always go through this sort of thing. It's stupid, and one day we may grow out of it but not yet apparently.

Now correct me if I'm wrong here but the tubs there don't even any bit and pieces there. So how is it a thing with no means of identifiable gender promote sexual oriantation?

I'm not sure I really want children's TV characters somehow being pressured into proving their sexuality in front of the young ones. I mean, what are they going to do, bring in a Tubby hooker? In the pantheon of silly accessories associated with being gay, I thing wearing a cape and boots with a leotard and sneaking around downtown with your 'sidekick' is pretty gay too. Is Tinky Winky just not solving enough crimes to be allowed to pass?

oh my... you know, I've watched telletubbies for years. Tinky winky has a bag, not a purse (even though it looks like one)... its still a bag . It holds cool things like songs and toys, not dildos or womens shoes. The kids who watch it are under 4 years old anyway... like they would even notice. These old farts need something to do over there besides nit pick on these cute little aliens. Who know's what sex they are anyway?? :confused:
