What do you think of clowns?
I am going on a clown bike ride this Friday night. I am pretty excited. I wasn't much a fan of clowns until about 3 or 4 years ago my pal had a clown themed birthday party and it was so so fun that now when the chance presents itself I am up for dressing up :-) I am more into circus de soleil type clownery than big red nose clownery though......
Anyhow, any of you out there frightened of clowns???

Re: What do you think of clowns?
I have an insane hatred of clowns and ballons, no idea why but I do

Re: What do you think of clowns?
I've always hated clowns. When I was a little kid, I kept kicking one that tried approached me. My mom told me to stop but she finally had to tell the clown to leave me alone. It took a long time for that fucking clown to realize little kids don't kick ppl as some sort of joke.
I've tried to modify my stance. I don't mind evil "clowns" and I like the use of make-up a lot. Deep down though? I'll always hate that phony smile. Never gave much thought to the balloons.

Re: What do you think of clowns?
Coulrophobia, in case you care.
Everyone except Voltaire can click HERE
Voltaire, who may want to understand more about why the phobia and societal over-reaction are particularly interesting to folks like me, can instead click HERE where there are absolutely no pictures of clowns.
BondageClown can click both and pleasure himself.

Re: What do you think of clowns?
I liked the first link. There are some of the "Killer Clowns From Outer Space" in the gallery! Fine by me!

Re: What do you think of clowns?
interesting...I actualy couldn't read all that about clowns, because, its about clowns and the the pictures, even the evil cool looking ones I don't like...it seems to be something about the configuration of the makeup.....well maybe, but, ....ah fuck it I'll just have to ponder where this comes from.
I hate balloons too......like realy, and it's not fear, just hatred

I didn't like a lot of the clowns there either. I would have had to hang about half of them from trees. The expressions on their face still made me angry. Dunno why. I like other stuff like grinning skulls. I'll comment on the article after I get some more caffeine in me haha.

Re: What do you think of clowns?
Welsford connects the Fool to clairvoyance and divination as well as to madness and sainthood.
-- Absolutely. The fool is an important and potential liberating archetype in many slavic cultures (Mad Monk Rasputin aka "The Holy Fool" is an obvious example)
Paranormal scholar George Hansen further demonstrates this connection between clowns, mystic saints, and paranormal power- and connects it with the archetype of the Trickster.
“Clowns have many striking characteristics as well as links with Shamanism…Fools and Clowns are sub-classes of Tricksters and share most essential qualities, including their association with supernatural… Their connection with the paranormal is unmistakable.”
-- Any similarities between clowns and the fool are superficial. I can see a genesis from the court jester to a point. Likening clowns to the trickster archetype is a serious stretch.
-- I think the circus clown is simply a product of the societies in which they appear. They were originally a way for the wealthy to poke fun at the destitute. See they're just clowns? They're really happy. As a middle class appeared, the clown simply became the "other". They are simply people who made a deliberate choice to hide behind a phony smile. We wonder why and sense malice in many of them. Likening them to the holy fool or even trickster archetype is giving them way too much credit.

Re: What do you think of clowns?
The only time I've ever been afraid of a clown was when I happened to glance over in traffic and saw one driving a car !

Re: What do you think of clowns?
To answer the original question in a smart-ass manner, not bloody much.
Actually, don't care much for, nor have much of anything against clowns.
Just always kinda bored me, that's all.

Re: What do you think of clowns?
Probably not, though it hasn't happened all that often to me.
Then again, God only knows what people call me out of my ear shot, if they even remember who I am five minutes after I leave the room.

Re: What do you think of clowns?
Clowns are abstract representations of Solomon's captured daemons and are used to chase away evil spirits from the circus performers circle of power... they are based on beings of great power which is why they appear very sinister even if they can make you laugh
