World Science Article:"Cynical Shyness"
BTW, just read this article from World Science a little while ago. It's on the concept of "cynical shyness"(shyness mixed with anger, cynicism and fear of others and their motivations), and wanted y'all to take a look at the article for yourselves and see what you think.
Is the notion valid, partially valid, or just plain horseshit just like Mother used to make???
Here's the link:http://www.world-science.net/otherne...al-shyness.htm.
Please check it out if you'd like to, and fire away about it.

I see elements of truth in it. The problem I see: These traits could be a subjective perception of one who simply prefers solitude or wants no part of what his/her peers are doing. Thus, without a hell of a lot more qualifications, I would not consider it a valid or sufficient theory. The root of the anger may well be the kid's peers simply being asses. Did those kids have the traits? Probably. Many others do though too. One should also remember most sociopaths will come across as quite social (albeit manipulative to the core)

horseshit just like mother used to make... i like that expression a lot :D may i just say... yoink!
back on subject though, i think that what they are saying makes a lot of sense, but thats wholly and solely because of the DUH factor. tehy are simply saying people who are repeatedly rejected become bitter and withdrawn. rubber stamp, fancy name, lets all make new drugs and be rich! their study is based on looking back and making assumptions based on anothers feelings, and using the link that all of the murderers were social rejects. there are a lot more than 7 social rejects...
Re: World Science Article:"Cynical Shyness"
evilstonermonkey: Very glad you like that expression. Please feel free to steal it.
Both you and Jackie T have made some great points thus far. If ya, or anyone else out there, has more to say about this, fire away.
For now, am keeping my opinions to myself(a Herculean task, I know;)), so others can have a chance for a change.
Re: World Science Article:"Cynical Shyness"
I think most shy people feel some anger about it and about their environment. I was a very shy child, partly because, by the time I got to college, it was my 12th school in 12 years. I didn't have the indicators to make someone go on a shooting spree, but I kind of think it is obvious that pain and anger are mixed up.
Re: World Science Article:"Cynical Shyness"
Firstly I'd like to congratulate the members of the Shyness Research Institute on making it to the conference.
Secondly, I'd like to ask (as some did in the audience) if the name of their institution may possibly bias their choice of possible causes. The study failed to consider anything else, and I could run the same numbers and prove a statistical correlation to income, music or religion. There simply isn't a big enough cohort for any meaningful numbers, and to say that correlation is the same as causality is as wrong as a scientist can get.
The modern psych community has become obsessed with labels - your kids can be clinically bipolar before they're out of diapers and if you can't put a patient in a box you need to make a new box. It's why I got out, as we are getting to the point where we have boxes for one person.
"Hey.. have you heard about sociopolitical passive-reflective directional inadequacy disorder? It's when a prominent politicians shoot a friend on a hunting trip. Major area of research yanno... probably get funding for another 6 months."

No thanks, Mr. Karl. Would have enough trouble saying it three times fast, let alone ten.
