Vatican Announces Seven New Deadly Sins

Vatican City (AHN) - In an attempt to give moral and ethical behavior more significance to current times, the Vatican has recently announced seven new deadly sins, published in an issue of the L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican's official newspaper.

The revision of the list comes after 1,500 years, with Vatican officials explaining that the new items address a global "secular" society bent on the concerns in the age of globalization. The sins are said to be an address to the "decreasing sense of sin" in the modern world.

"The sins of today have a social resonance as well as an individual one," said Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary. "In effect, it is more important than ever to pay attention to your sins."

Mgr Girotti named the new mortal sins to be (1)genetic modification; (2) human experimentations, (3) polluting the environment; (4) social injustice; (5) causing poverty; (6) financial gluttony; and (7) taking drugs.

The sins were added, according to the Telegraph, to the original seven, which Mgr Girotti described has having "rather individualistic dimenion(s)."

Mgr Girotti explained that numbers have shown that less Catholics in Italy go to confession, with 60 percent no longer participating in what is considered one of the most important sacraments.

In remedying this, he acknowledged that priests must also consider new sins, brought about by changes in the global community.

"You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbor's wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out mortally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos," the Times quoted Mgr Girotti.

Girotti also recognized the growing problems of abortion, **********, and a widespread habit of "making do without God."

"Those who trust in themselves and in their own merits are, as it were, blinded by their own 'I', and their hearts harden in sin," said Girotti.

i'm guilty of number seven.

It never ceases to fascinate me that humans think so highly of themselves as to assume first of all that some god created us, and secondly that it gives a shit about us, let alone that it's making sure we don't break some fucking made up rules about how to survive on this spinning space rock. PULEEEESSSEEEEEE!

EVERYONE is guilty of #3.

I fully support #1. I hope that we remember this, though, if and when our research into genetics yields a potential treatment for a future pope.

so are the old sins no longer in effect

it looks to me that they are mor government/corporation oriented

the pope is a kook for not making buying,selling,using drugs a sin

of course i wonder how many "drugs" keep him alive

i dislinke how no one ever defines "drugs"

yeah, these new sins do exist in very grey areas

1)genetic modification;
dioxin, ddts, cfcs, pvc...

(2) human experimentations,
abc, nbc, cbs

(3) polluting the environment;
no duh.

(4) social injustice;
democracy, terrorism, whichever side of the coin.

(5) causing poverty;
(6) financial gluttony;
capitalism, whichever side of the coin.

and (7) taking drugs.
bayer asprin, ridlin, viagra, lunesta, and that's not even counting the fun ones.

the pope is anti-industrial civilization? good for him.

That's why those books were written. To give people guidance in life and how to make world a better place for everyone. You shouldn't judge other peoples beliefs like that.

Oh is that what this post is about then...how religious and pious we all are? Hmmm... well I guess I really missed the boat on that then didn't I. So it's fine to poke fun at the newly revised 7 deadly sins but my sort of input isn't welcome? Interesting coming from a member of society, like myself, who is constantly being judged, criticized for being themselves. I hope your comment made you feel a little better about yourself - maybe you're not guilty of any sins. Good for you.

My post wasn't meant to get in fight with you. I was just annoyed by your denying something that you never accepted. How can somebody deny something that they never accepted at first and how can someone curse god when they never accepted him.

isn't the human race a byproduct of all these sins?

anyway,for me, obviously #3..and i guess prescription drugs is still drugs, so #7 too..

yes they do. every time you exhale you are emitting c02. so according to the pope, we're all going to hell. But I don't think that's too much of a shock, because we already all knew that we were going to hell. But Catholics are gonna be pissed.

I'm going to pope now to force him to tell the people that there is third place we can go after death for all non religious people.

Now is Hollywood going to remake 7..... Now that would be boring, but some what interesting Movie. I can be twisted, and others... 3 would be liter bug...
