Re: Have you ever been fired from a job?
What were you working as Ruby?
Btw, i've never been fired.
1st job: Telemarketer : Walked out with a paying customer on the line. Because I just felt I had better things to do than disturb people at 9PM. (seriously)
2nd job: Target : Transferred from AZ location to IL location. Walked out because the IL location kept insisting I need to know how to use a box cutter...uh..even though I was working at the AZ one for 5 years, and pretty sure I know how..and my title didn't require me to have to regardless.
3rd: My own business : If I fire myself then the business closes :D
4th: Second Optional Tax job, Protein drink factory : I've almost walked out about 15 times because of the politics and bullshit..but somehow I'm still there dropping 1 ton pallets of cookie crumbs for fun.

Never got fired.
Quit one terrible job in high school.
The boss wanted people to do push ups if they weren't constantly working.
(ex-military guy)
Got laid off from a shitload of jobs.
But mainly due to companies closing.

What was that job supposed to be, when you were not doing push-ups?
Re: Have you ever been fired from a job?
one place fired me over the phone, which i later found out is apparently illegal. damn. it was because i would phone in during a panic attack. me + work = panic.
round table pizza just stopped putting me on the schedule and i gleaned from that that i was no longer an asset to them. it was a seasonal job anyway.
the others i just wound up quitting after 2 days - 1 month after i couldn't handle the stress.

Most places, a seasonal worker can be laid off at any time, in any way, without cause. Realistically, would you really have wanted them to ask you to come in, just so they could fire you in person? I don't think I would be inclined to fire someone over the phone, but I can't stand talking business on the phone period. Certainly, to date, I have never fired anyone on the phone, although I guess I have kinda quit via phone and I've been laid off by phone, not really fired fired, but definitely laid off that way. I've quit in person many times. I've had a couple of occasions where firing someone in person was not possible so I've fired I think one person via online message and I think one person via letter.

I guess there is at least some rationale for having you do push-ups then. Still kinda crazytown, but less so than if the job were say retail where strength wouldn't help and being sweaty for customers would not be a good thing.
Re: Have you ever been fired from a job?
i forgot about this thread when i was fired from my last club for, get this, NOT being stupid. I made an official complaint to the owner of the bar for having to pay forty dollars for a missed shift ( i was so sick i couldn't move), a day shift fee and a night shift fee - both for a day where i was sched from open to close, 4pm till 2 am, and there was literally no one in the bar except me the DJ and the Bartender till almost 9:30pm, and then Bouncer and DJ tips outs, bringing my grand fee total to $120 just for showing up at work that day. the conversation we had is as follows:
the Owner: and how are you tonight?
me: i, well, could be better.
him: tell me about it.
me: i don't want to bore you with my troubles, hon.
him: no, tell me.
me: it figures that the one night of the week there's customers in here, i won't be taking home $100.
him: you do not discuss money with customers!!
me: i know you're not a customer honey, i'm not stupid. (i figured out who he was by watching the bartenders and the regulars defer to his authority with body language and verbal cues. attention to detail is a curse.)
him: Out of my bar! OUT! OUT! OUT!
me: fine.
and then there was a bouncer standing over me to make sure i didn't wreck up the place and then to escort me off the property. it was very dramatic. all in all though i felt that my Jedi training was paying off very well. i vented a bit heatedly to the bouncer, apologizing and explaining that it wasn't him i was mad at, got dressed and left. very neat and orderly, thought.
btw - if you are ever in Portland do not go to the Blush gentleman's club on McLaughlin. it is a skeezy little hell hole run by a racist Serbian chauvinist.

I think he had the same work philosophy, regardless of the type of work.
He figured that if he was paying you per hour, he wanted you to be doing some kind of work every minute of that hour. So if you were done loading a palette, he wanted you to pick up a broom and start sweeping. If you were done sweeping, and there was still no actual "work" to do, then go clean the bathroom or something. He just wanted you to be CONSTANTLY working. I thought that was a little crazy. I prefer when a boss tells me what they need done, and I do it. Attitudes like his leads to people working, but working very slowly... I'd rather reward employees with some leisure time if they get things done really fast. I always preferred jobs where people get paid for getting the job done. Contract work. Complete this task, and you get paid. Then it's up to you how hard you want to work, and how much money you want to make...
