Re: Time Travel
Decided to bump his thread because i was thinking about some spacey stuff and time travel is one of my favorite subjects.
Steven Hawking attempted to prove with his "logic" that time travel is impossible because he threw a party for people from the future and no one traveled back in time from the future and went to his party to tell him about it, so therefore they must never be able to....
To that I would respond with: Mr. Hawking, did you ever consider that you are a nerd and maybe no one likes you, and that's why they didn't show up to your party? In fact, tons of people have traveled back in time to tell people about it, but no one believed them. All scientists agree that the idea of a time-traveling space ship is stupid, so why would you expect something like that as a form of proof?
I'm just kidding. I would love to go to a Steven Hawking party. But in all seriousness, if you did travel back in time and told people about it, they would probably tell you that they had already heard about time travel from someone who came back from an even later date in the future than you and that the idea was old news and make fun of you for it.
I'm not going to bore you talking about how time doesn't exist and that all alternate universes occur simultaneously within our own universe. You should read the really boring book The End Of Time that explains it all thoroughly.

Re: Time Travel
This website needs to go back to 2005 when it was actually fun.

Re: Time Travel
How would you know? unless you traveled into the future and by that I mean the present from the year 2005.

Re: Time Travel
Yeah, I'd generally want to go forward in time, not back.
Life has been hard for people since time began. So I'd prefer to go
forward to a time when we've worked out all our bullshit, and can
actually get along, not destroy each other or the planet, and have
open minds, etc. Even though it would be to your advantage to
go back to 1980 and invent the internet, or go back to Roman
times and make a gun, it still sucked overall. Lots of disease,
social problems, wars, crazy religious stuff, etc.
It would be cool to pop into specific times in history,
just to see things that were only written about. See the
pyramids being built, see the gardens of Babylon, etc.
But if you actually went back to try to change history,
it would probably go badly in totally unpredictable ways.
It certainly would be tempting to go way back to Roman times,
and introduce them to the scientific method, be the wise man
with all the answers about the universe, etc. But who knows
if they would use that knowledge for good or evil? Heck,
even Hitler was almost capable of building a nuke, if he
had just a little bit more advanced science and time.
So imagine if the science of nukes and guns and stuff
like that was available to people before their social and
cultural maturity was there to keep that stuff in check?
It would probably make every war we had already be
10 times more deadly and lethal.

Re: Time Travel
You should read the book After Dachau by "primitivist" writer Daniel Quinn.
It's about a person who experiences a past life regression and realizes that they are living in a world 500 years after Hitler won WWII, and this fact has been surpressed in history so no one knows it and they think they are living in the present decade.
I guess that gives it away, but it's still an interesting idea and entertaining read.
The point is supposed to be that this is somehow plausible and that the rise of facism and holocaust was and is an inevitable consequence of sociology and economics, or western civilization if you like that better. I think that the idea of a return to the golden age of the "noble savage" is pretty dumb an just the same old mumbo jumbo that religion has been telling us for a millennium about how people are cursed to be evil. But that's just me.

Re: Time Travel
it would be kind of nice to travel back to a time before people where around and you could go for days without seeing a peice of garbage
-
Re: Time Travel
I also think it would be super-cool to be able to explore someplace that has never been explored by humans.
Like when settlers came to the USA and headed into the west.
There were no cities, no roads, nothing but nature...
I am sure you could walk into the Amazon and get a similar experience,
but it would be different if you were back in time, and knew there were no
people at all. Even cooler to be able to go back to prehistoric times and walk around.
Someplace where you really had no idea what was going to be around the next corner.

Re: Time Travel
Time travel is easy, but it can be painful. I only know how to go forward in time, and it is not that difficult to do.
1. Drink a bottle of Vodka
2. Wake up and it will be the next day. Sometimes you can skip forward a few days, but i suggest not trying to jump forward by more than a few hours at a time, until you have mastered the art, as it is HAZARDOUS! You have been warned! The world you wake up in can be a completely different place from the time you left, and not always in a good way.
There are health hazards associated with time travel, also!
Happy Travels!

Re: Time Travel
Go back to the days and take advantange of certain stock purchases or perhaps take a camera to any speicific event and capture it as it really happened.
