as a matter of fact,they put a damper on the locking...
think about it...you put this sticky goo in there,the hair can move around to lock itself...
as far as maintince,well...i do nothing,never have either...but you can "palm roll" them....kinda self explainatory,just roll them inbetween yourpalms...
it wont help much,but it makes you feel better,haha....
a little scalp massage is always good to keep the roots strong....but again,i don't do any of that,haha...
well on the knotty boy site it says the point of having the wax is so they would hold together just like the elastics do... but you dont use it for that long a time, like maybe 3 weeks tops, and you dont use that much... not enough for it to get nasty, and the knottyboy shampoo is supposed to wash it out too. apparently.

if you put wax in your dreads it won't just wash out easily(at all),or fade off...i've seen pictures of people who used wax once and it was still there after a year...after buckets of crazy hot water and shit to get it out...

I just stumbled on this thread. I'll throw in my 2 cents. My dreads are about down to my ass now. All natural with no wax or whatever, just ten years of patience. I don't care much for the knotty boy look. They seem obviously fake to me and are easy to pick out from real ones. A certain amount of pride comes with wearing something on your back for ten years thats all you. Not product. They are very clean and smell nice. So I suggest going natural.
I suppose why you want them could come into play as well. Mine started as a hippie/rasta religious type thing. Not for fashion.
hmm, i suppose out of the two choices (religion and fashion) it would be fashion as im completely atheist, however, to say it was for fashion would also be wrong, as the majority of people around where i live would not apreciate the locks. im getting em basically because i want them, i cant grow them natural, as the max ill have em in is a year due to me needing to get a job after uni, once in a job i will prolly start em again but for the interviewing process they will have to disapear
