I have finally gotten old.
Dear Kids of America:
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-A average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death!
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way I was going to lay a bunch of shit like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it. But.... Now that I've reached the ripe old age of thirty-two, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! Compared to my childhood, you live in a freaking Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!
When I was a kid we didn't have The Internet -- we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves! And there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter -- with a pen! --and then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! And there were no MP3s or Napster! You wanted to steal music, you had to go to the record store and shoplift it yourself! Or we had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up!
You want to hear about hardship? You couldn't just download porn! You had to bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! Those were your options! We didn't have fancy stuff like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either. When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was. It could be your boss, your mom, a collections agent, you didn't know! You just had to pick it up and take your chances!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked! Your guy was a little square and in order to have any fun you had to rely on your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win, the game just kept on getting harder and faster until you died! When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! A tall guy sat in front of you, you were out of luck. And sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 20 channels and there was no on screen menu! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! And there was no Cartoon Network! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Did you hear what I said you lazy little freaks? We had to wait all week for cartoons! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980! .....But I don't want to lecture you.

Re: I have finally gotten old.
Being 37 in 2 weeks time, I have even more to bitch about. Ever hear of an etch-a-sketch pal? Try working with that.

Re: I have finally gotten old.
I'm 24, I have a 15 year old brother, he gets away with three times the shit I got into, and I didn't get into a lot of shit. My mom has called the cops looking for me twice in my life, because I didn't call when I had changed plans. My brother gets to do pretty much what he pleases, he has yet to realize when he turns 18 I'm beating the shit out of him. If he pulls any more shit, he and I will have a nice long brutal talk.

Re: I have finally gotten old.
I remember the day I saw the head line in the newspaper:
"Disco is Dead"
I didn't even know what disco was, I was so young.

Re: I have finally gotten old.
Just for the clothing I was made to wear I should be bitter.

:1orglaugh Too true.
I could never wake up early enough for Saturday morning cartoons. I really liked the idea of the Superfriends, but not enough to set my alarm. Don't forget how there was no Adult Swim for damn sure. Not at any hour.

Re: I have finally gotten old.
I wouldn't be fifteen today if you guaranteed me therapy and drugs free on demand for the rest of my life. I'm just about old enough to handle this open-air lunatic asylum.

Yeah when you were my age, letters didn't even exist. You had to chisel your message into granite slabs and bribe a barefoot egyptian slave to deliver it. Oh, they had papyrus, but that was only for rich people.

Cartoon network is revamping the Superfriends (sorta) they are calling it "Justice League Unlimited" or something like that. Starts next friday.

Re: I have finally gotten old.
You don't really feel old (no matter how old you are) Till you get a birthday gift of a Rainbow Bright (or similar) Doll that comes in 20th Anniversary Edition "Retro" Packaging. Says so right on the box. Could just kill my mom for that one! I'm only 21 but some days I feel like I've been here for centuries...

Re: I have finally gotten old.
You know I used to watch all the cartoons too. Not just Superfriends, the Hanna Barbara stuff, G.I. Joe, Thundercats and Transformers. I remember the Barbie action cartoon, watching a lot of My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake and the Care Bears (they still aren't selling that pig yet). In the late seventies, when I was like 3, I even woke up to watch the Lone Ranger.
-
Re: I have finally gotten old.
I'm not worried about the pig, I want She-Ra!

Re: I have finally gotten old.
Well, He-Man's back, who knows? I remember getting Teela for Easter as a gift. Kind of like my first female action figure (Barbie).

Re: I have finally gotten old.

Thudercats! I was hooked on that one for a while! I saw a few of Strawberry shortcake (don't remember much), the Care Bears movies (the one about that magic book I saw several times), and a few of Rainbow Bright even (don't remember that either). Even had a Rainbow Brite doll when I was little. Never got a looksee at My Little Pony though... I preferred the cartoons that were less fluffy.
I also used to watch some anime too when I was young, such as this: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency...ime.php?id=628 (Fantastic Adventures of Unico). But I still watch anime now, so I guess I just never grew out of it. :)

You had cassettes?? When I was a kid the games came on punchcards.
-
Re: I have finally gotten old.
You know, on Rainbow Brite I thought it was interesting her enemy lived in "The Pitts," although that was pretty much lingo for "sucks" at the time, I never missed the analogy that it was kind of like she was going to Hell and winning by the use of her pony, fuzzy/cute dolls and general good nature. Does the Devil hate her, I wonder? For trivializing Hell so?

holy shit- Etch A Sketch was the most boring thing ever invented- they should've used it as a torture tool-
Quoja Boards likewise..
btw don't worry- everything's been reduced by a decade (so they say on tv) so 37 is the 'new' 27, 40 is the new 30 - whatever..P

Re: I have finally gotten old.
Pedar: Hehe, that's very good to know. I only feel 21, and act 16, so I am doing great!

Re: I have finally gotten old.
does anyone besides me remember playing pogs in the schoolyard during recess?
-
Re: I have finally gotten old.
I felt old when I first realized that I was in High School ten years ago...... and I feel older still realizing that I made that realization last year.

Holy shit, i rember pogs, they were the coolest thing in the world. for about a week. For my the best part of the experience wasnt actually playing with them, but shoplifting them from woolworths.
-
Re: I have finally gotten old.
pogs were the cats ass back in elementary school but they got baned becasue it was gambling or something
-
Re: I have finally gotten old.
Well i guess pogs were banned for the fact that you threw bits of brass (if you had a good slammer) at the floor, and if you missed they hit people and could be construed as a wepon.
What would I say to kids of today?
Never take anything for granted. Friends, money, job security, all are fleeting like love and time. As long as yoi've got your health, that's the important thing. Never judge a man's behavior with out first knowing his situation. Never judge a lover on what they did before you were there, it's not your right. And make sure to eat at least breakfast everyday.
