I have a tendency to think that things which are harmful (as opposed to things that might be) are not a good idea. I don't think that people should drive cars. fuck, cars are a hell of a lot more dangerous then drugs. I try to refrain from driving them as much as possible. but I don't think we should ban cars or turkey legs because that would just be ridiculous.

as I've said before I don't think that it is in the majority of people to use "hard drugs" casually and without an ill side effects. either way, illegal drugs pose a problem to many and are indeed a legitimate problem in our society. That being said, while employing a BS "drugs are bad" campaign, we do very little to actually get people to stop using drugs. It should seem obvious that the first and most imporant step is creating an environment for people were they genuinly are happy and don't feel the need to escape from thier reality, and have little use for the drugs in the first place. secondly we need to stop throwing our money away on the disasterous "war on drugs" and use it to treat people for thier disease of drug addition, rather then just punshing them for making a choice that we don't agree with.

Again, this all depends on your definition of what life is about.

You keep talking about hurting other people.
But do you live you life so that no one else is ever hurt?
Never be in love, or let anyone love you, for fear of hurting someone?
Let assholes walk all over you, because you don't want a conflict?
Never drive fast, because you would not want to crash?
Never take risks?

I think most people take drugs because they want to have fun.

I get my fun in other ways nowadays, but I know that most forms
of fun have some risk to yourself, and to other people.

But I don't want to have a safe and boring life.

I really do agree that a lot of addicts end up fucked up,
or have problems, or end up doing crimes, etc...
And I don't have tolerance for crime.
If someone wants to rob me, or steal my shit,
I want them busted, and locked up...

But if someone wants to smoke out, take some E, or do some acid, etc,
and they are having fun, then more power to them. Keep off the roads,
and don't steal my shit, and they are welcome to fry themselves until
they can't function. It's their life. Their bodies. Let people do what they
want. That's what America is about. Freedom. The freedom to be weird,
unique, individual, and to follow your own dreams of happiness. If
drugs make people happy, then let them be happy.

I only have a problem with crime.
If they are going to fuck with my life, then I have a big problem with it.
But people doing shit on their own time, on their own dollar, and at
their own expense, is their own business...

Can you back that up? You are basically saying that any and all drug use hurts others - how can you possibly show that to be true?

you know basically doing drugs myself bores me.

people I know who still do drugs are completely unreliable, except as drug users.

everyone I know who uses drugs is a complete waste of time as far as getting anything done goes.

if I know that a drug user is going to be involved in a project I give it a pass, and rarely if ever regret it. (as in 99% of the time it's a travesty.)

this comes from years, and years, and years of experience.

after I got bored with drugs, I still continued to hang out, do business with, and rely on folks who were still using them.

But I totally agree, that most heavy drug users tend not to have

Although I do know some people who *love* drugs,
mainly halucenogens, but are also very motivated and
focused. They just love dropping acid now and then...

I think it depends a lot on what drug it is.

Pot fiends are notorious for being lazy.

yeah, i made the dreadful mistake of trying E once or twice. it was shortly before i came to the realization and got diagnosed as "bipolar" or manic-depressive. it basicly triggered a severe depressive episode in me cuz of its effects on serotonin. it took a long time for me to recover from it. totally messed up my brains biochemistry.

i was stupid. more interested in the happy feelgood effects of E at the time than its aftereffects.

thurb, You're absolutely right. i dont have proof that i can just magically pop right out of my ass.......

so here's the deal...if i woudl have proof, you'd have proof rebuttaling my proof or you'd simply brush it off as "a sober non drug using person has done the same"

then we'd go on and on and on and eventually ruin this thread over arguing and neither of us would go off with that accomplished feeling so Ill go ahead and truce on this masterful debate and simply stick to my guns about how drug abuse is bad and how it does affect people around you wether one wishes to realize it or not and you can stick to your convictions as well. we'll have some fruitcake and coffee and a nice big ciagr and go about our seperate theologies peacefully.

and yeh, dk, I do tend to live a rather dull and boring life by choice simply because I am tired of adventuring and tired of getting thrown in the muck or getting slapped in the face over meaningless experiences that could, in hindsight, been avoided or dealt with in a more raitonal manner (I have two dislocated shoulders and two chipped teeth to prove it)
