Do you think a university education is important?
For a long time, my biggest regret in life was that I did the higher learning plan. Now that I have finished paying my student loans and gotten my brain out of hock and am a successful creative person, I am less sorry. Do you think a university education is of benefit?
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
Depends on the person...I never liked the school enviornment and couldn't function in it for very long. Education can come in various forms though so experience seems to be a better option for some people...was for me anyhow.
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
From personal experience, college was horrible, but most people seem to enjoy it.
The main benefit is that it is more prestegious, and will get you hired in more places.

In order to get into certain field you have to have a certain education. Like nursing, the field I'm going for. You can't be a nurse w/o attending a nursing program. But a lot of things you do learn from experience, and there are fields out there where a college education isn't a must (I knew some web designers & photographers who never finished college).
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
i dropped out of uni after the first year because i loathed it, the course, and the people i was forced to live with. Now i do wonder, but there are so many things i wouldn't have if my life had been different so no real regrets.
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
Dont know if it is true, but I have been told that Bill Gates never went to college.
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
Gates was attending Harvard, but left after a couple of years to do Microsoft.
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
Everybody has a college degree these days, so you pretty much need to get one in order to have a shot at a decent job. Times are changing though. College degrees are becoming extremely expensive. And now that corporations are shipping skilled jobs off to third world countries, the only jobs left are things like Wal-Mart greeter, which doesn't require a college degree. One's best bet would probably be to go to a vocational school for plumbing or something like that.

I'm a starving art student. I hope this will prepare me well to be a starving artist. lol
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
The only job I ever got for my high SATs, good grades, and impressive university education was nonsexual escort. The company preferred girls with good educational credentials to make it clear that they were not a prostitution service. I quit shortly after being held captive for some hours in the home of the scion of a pet food fortune. I escaped when a Guns and Roses roadie/drug dealer stopped by and held the door open for me just long enough for me to slip out.

Learn to pull cons...
seriously. That's the only way I paid for my art supplies for years. I can't do that anymore due to the fact I don't need a Felony Conviction hanging over me...but it's sooooooooooo tempting when I see some tools I want.
Plus people make it so easy these days I wouldn't even need to leave home...and witha DMV down the street...
It's like being a former alchoholic and working and living in a bar.

Re: Do you think a university education is important?
Hmmm....
I'd have to say that College is very Important. I mean first of all Life's just funnier when you have the knowledge required to "get" the jokes.
But admittedly, if you're going to be a carpenter, then it's not really necessary.
But If you're going the Law school Route, then it's necessary. I did it because of the knowledge that all shall bow down and prostrate themselves before the god-like power that is "The Lawyer" AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH....
heh... and as you can see additional education does not require a loss of one's innate immaturity/megalomania.
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
I hate going to school! I hate the need to conform and the beaucractic nonsense of it all. Then there is working really late on some strange history, language or possibly mathematics class that you will never use. Oh, what about those early morning labs and high lab fee? Then there is the hundred dollar books you can only sell back for a few dollars. Plus, if mumsy and popsy don't pay it, you have to work a job (or 2!) and struggle through the fact that your young, fresh teen body is now fast becoming a withered 39 year old's hard worn flesh!
That said: STAY IN SCHOOL!!! I only went to trade school in my mid-twenties and I feel I am in all ways better for it. Sure, I waited to be ready to go and until I had a little more ambition. But, I wish I had planted some deep, unabiding interest in me that would not abate until I achieved my Master's.
Regrettably, I do not say this as it would save me from a life of being poor. But, it would have given me more sincere ways to mature and evaluate how to best assert myself in the world. Plus, when you're in school you can use what little free time you have to make some serious professional connections if you choose. Many of the friends I made in school, years down the road, got me the best jobs. Now, I have one who is a VP, a lawyer, going to soon be a professor and another who runs a medium size corporation. Time and time again I say those who wait, regretting it in their late twenties to early forties and seeing a direct line between their financial strife of now, and lack of sticking-to-it then.
But, all in all, I do not regret the "school of life" approach. In that I have found a far more diverse experience than I ever would at school. I have found loving lifetime friends that I would have never met, in the right circumstances, in private. I find though, that I would have better prepared, by far, by an education I completed in earlier years.
Re: Do you think a university education is important?
I had the all powerful lawyer fantasy just the other day! (and yes, I did laugh in it.)
