Do anybody here own a car?
I'm not sure if it's just me but... It seems like majority of posters here don't even own a car. If you don't own car, is it by choice or not? If so, why?
I'm 24, almost 25 and I don't even have a license and have no plan on getting one any time soon. Mainly because in my city, I can get almost anywhere within 30 mins by bike.
I use to plan on get license someday, but after seeing what happen with the gas price, hearing people complaining about how much it cost, and spending some money I don't want to on bike parts, etc... I quickly learned that car isn't worth it at all.
Beside that I HATE long drive with passion. So it's not like I'll ever be driving more than two hours top if I have one. So it seems like a huge waste to me.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
my company owns the van, and pays for the gas...................they're the best!!
-
Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I never needed one, I spent most of my young adult life with it being more convenient not to drive. I've been VERY slow to catch up with any kind of need to have to drive being way out in the boonies.
We are a one car family anyway, so it doesn't make a huuugggee difference.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I just turned 20 and I have two. True one doesn't run and is going to be completely rebuilt, but it is a '76 custom Ford pickup that my grandfather had built and has been left to me.
As soon as I can get the money I intend to get a motorsickle.
Also live in a podunk town in southeast Kansas right now and a car is kind of a requirement to even be able to get to class.

my car....i drive an hour to work and an hour home every day. But im moving next week so I will be driving less, i like my drive though, it's my alone time. I have cheap payments and my cars good on gas. and the bus is slimy.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I need a car to get to and from work, among other places, since public transportation around Fort Hood sucks and cabs are expensive as hell. Besides that and growing up in NW Indiana I had to have one to take the 20 minute drive to school or work. I've got my lovely piece of shit '89 Mazda B2200 pickup. With what I've done under the hood though, it gets low 20's mpg city and around 30 highway, so I don't worry too much about gas.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I'm 25. When I'm in a car I have a horrible attention span, because I like to look around, so I thought it was best not to drive for the sake of others. But I do own a car, imagine that. I'm hoping to get my license in the Spring and buy a new(er) car and try to concentrate more while driving.

Oh yeah I have a car. I couldnt imagine not having one. Then again I grew up in a rural-ish area when it was miles to get to anything. I actually tried to get by without a car though when I first arrived in Japan. Yeah.. not so much. Walking during Typhoon season its not very fun.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
Living on a mountain, without a car I'd be dead. Nobody will deliver anything, and so I'd have to cycle to the village. The 'getting there' part is easy, but the trip back would kill me.
From 16 I've never not had at least one car/truck, and they've always been SUVs - so driving "normal" hire cars feels like like a soap box derby. Yeah, environmental yadda yadda... Prius drivers may want to hug trees, but I can take em home.
-
Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I would die without my car, haha. I drive EVERYWHERE. I just drove across the country, twice. I drive to LA, every few weeks. I'm driving up to Portland, Seattle, and Canada, in a few weeks. Plus, after living in New York City... I could not survive on San Francisco's joke of a public transportation system. The BART only runs in a a line, inside SF and it stops running at 1 am. WTF? Don't even get me started on LA's public transit, haha.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
a few Peugeots. i miss my 205 the most though even if it did need a new gearbox once a years and driveshafts after 6 months

Re: Do anybody here own a car?

if i were to take the written test today, i'd fail >.<
i wanna drive SO FUCKING BAD.
*rawr*

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
Proud ownner of NO driver licence ;)
I'm 22 but I'm so neglected for practical things that I would end up killing lots of children/old ladies down the streets if I had to drive a car!!
Actually here public transportations kinda suck but until there are people who are disposable to pick me up no problem ;)

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
thinking about it. my driving lessons at the time cost me 17 an hour back in 2000
dread to think what they cost here now.
then theres the practical test
the theory test
the hazard awareness test
the mechanical test
then cost of buying a car
putting it through annual roadworthiness and emisions testing
putting fuel in it
insuring it
taxing it
fixing it
$£$£$£$£$£$£
not suprised a few of my friends have no licence as they were never that financialy stable.
if anything. 9 years of driving... its made my lazier and slower on my feet. i used to walk everywhere

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
Getting a car improved by life in a big way. Before, so many things were big ordeals. Biking is awesome, but what if it's pouring rain? Or what if you need to get somewhere out of town? Now, I can't stand the idea of not having such freedom of mobility. It might be different if I lived in a town with decent transit. Buying and maintaining a car is expensive, but it can open up employment and recreational opportunities that you might never have had otherwise.
Of course, having a driver's license is not the same as having a car. A car may or may not be the best choice for you, but having a license could come in reeeally handy if you find yourself in a situation where you need to drive. It's just a good skill to have
-
Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I used to have a car. I never had a drivers license though. Once I got my beginners so I would have ID to get into the bar but I never bothered to get my full license. Anyway, I bought a car cheap from a friend of mine and my ex did all the driving. Between insurance, gas, maintenance, etc. it sucked up all my money. Sometimes I miss it because of the freedom but honestly, it was making me fat and lazy.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
We own a ford POS escort.
It's not so bad, except that every time we fix something, within a week, something else is borked.
So we are going to buy a second car with my tax check :)

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I lease. does that count?
Nice little blue Subaru sub-compact. Had to be blue, my 5 year old insisted.
-
Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I love to drive but when I moved into the city I sold my car because insurance and parking were ridiculous.
I lasted on foot for about 2 years until I got my motorcycle license and bought a bike. Best decision I ever made.
-
Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I have a car & I also like driving. I hate taking the fucking bus. It's slow, I hate waiting for shit and frankly not having a car will seriously fuck-up any attempt at meeting people (i.e. getting laid).
It's like yeah, "I'll meet you there" or "I'd love to sleep over but the last bus is at 1:00am, and I have to work tomorrow". You know what I'm saying?
Unless you live in an highly populated urban area it's almost mandatory.
-
Re: Do anybody here own a car?
learned to drive when i was 17 and got my car around then too. Have had the same car since then.. a 1994 Oldsmobile cutlass cierra. I love Mr. Car :). Gotta admit though only reasons I own a car are to get to work and to help me get puss haha.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
Speaking of getting license and driving. If I was ever to get a car, I'd get a old beat up jeep. That way I dont have to worry about making it look nice or upgrading it and will be able to go almost anywhere I want to.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I drive a new car every couple days. We have a corporate avis account, so we get discounts like a few bucks a day to rent em. Cheaper than insurance and car payments.
Ive driven about 20 different models this month, my favorite being the Mitsubishi Eclipse 2009, but in black.

Shittiest one we had so far has to be Dodge Nitro. It's way horrible on gas and very bouncy.

I'm looking for an old Jeep Gladiator myself. With the straight 6, you just can't kill any Jeep, I've tried. Twice.

You know, since I've been out of the state, everyone I've met from Indiana has a POS, including myself. Weird. In fact, the combined price of the 4 vehicles I've owned is only 4 grand and my truck was 1500.
I miss my uncle's bike that he let me ride in high school. Big ol' Titan Roadrunner. But now I'm going to have to get up off my ass and actually get the endorsement before I buy myself one for my post-deployment present. (My POS truck was the present from the last one.)

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
This is an interesting topic, because a lot of people I know who live in LA do not drive.
But they also don't have very good jobs.
I often debate if one leads to the other in some ways.
I always just assumed I *needed* a car to get to work. So the only way to make money was to have a car, go to a job, work, pay bills, etc. So at 16, I had a car. A cheap car, but a car. It was a thrashed 1962 VW beetle. Insurance was cheap on a car like that. And so were repairs. But I just assumed it was something you needed to have, in order to do anything. Go to a friends house? Gotta drive over there. Got a job interview? Hop in the car and go to it. Need to move to another city? Hop in your car with all your shit, and off you go! A car was always a big part of my work life.
So I wonder sometimes if the people who don't drive, do it because part of them don't really want the responsibility of a full-time job. Do any of you "non-drivers" maintain a full-time job? Do you take the bus to work every single day? I just always found that if I was working full time, I had plenty of money to fix my car. And money to get an apartment of my own, etc.
Work leads to responsibility. But it also leads to financial independence. But I think that sense of having to work every single day is not appealing to some people. So one leads to the other. If you aren't willing to work a regular job, then owning a car is out of range financially.

Yea DK, I've been working since I was 17. The job I'm at now I've been there for 6 years and I make pretty decent money. And yes, I do take the bus to work every day. I hate public transport as much as the next guy but for $50/mo. I can use it as often as I need/want.
My car was costing me too much, not to mention other unnecessary expenses (ie: loser ex-boyfriend). If I had my license I probably would have a car but as it is now, I just can't be bothered and that means I have more money for other things...like boots:D

That kind of goes with what someone else said about having a car as appose to having a license. I know people who live in Chicago that have very good full-time jobs, like managers and shit, and not at fast food joints. But they live just outside of downtown or in downtown and work in the downtown area. Most of them have less than a 15 minute walk to one of the train stations and can get off within another 5 minute walk to work. They save a lot of money with a CTA card as appose to buying a car, insurance, gas, and repairs. Most of them still have a license in case they go on vacation or work out of town and have to rent or borrow a car, but they still don't own one.
Basically, in big cities, if the public transit system is good, most people shouldn't need a car.

Thanks for advice on jeep, Nathan.

Where I live, there's a lot of bike paths which mean there's many short cuts that can be taken that car cannot go through. In few case, bike even get to certain part before car or at same time. In most case bike will get there about 10 or 15 mins after car. They also just approved for three more bike trails to be built by 2010.
So if I was to get a car, I'd be spending at least $120 a month on insurance and may... $50 on gas. That would be $170. Then the rest of expense (registering/repairing) will just add it up. So in end it make no sense for me to own a car.
On top of that, I'm a mixed martial arts and kick boxer so any work out I can get is good lol.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
And yes, I get the point that if you live in NY, or SF, and have good public transportation, you can do fine without a car.
But in a lot of the rest of the country, it gives you a lot more freedom, and access to more and better jobs. My friends in LA who don't drive, can't take a job that is too far away from them. It has to be bike distance, or a short bus ride. They can't be living downtown, and take a job in Long Beach, because they will spend an hour or two on the bus every morning, and every night. So they are restricted to just jobs that are near to their apartment. Which usually means they end up with kind of lame jobs, like working at some coffee shop, etc. It's all random jobs that happen to be nearby, rather than finding a really awesome job that might be farther away. Plus they always need people to give them rides to the clubs, etc. It just seems to me to be a real lack of freedom. You are chained to your home, or your local area. Instead of just deciding at the drop of the hat, to go to the beach on the weekend, without having to take the bus, or call someone and ask them for a ride...
I can't imagine not having a car...

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
18, no license, no anything. My boyfriend and friends usually drive me anyhere i need to go. I hate not being able to do things when i want but oh well :P i can usually get a ride if i need one.

Re: Do anybody here own a car?
I guess it's partly what you consider "normal".
I grew up watching the adults around me, all drive to work every day.
So it just seemed like that is what you did when you became an adult.
You got a car, got a job, and drove your car to work every day...
But I suppose if all your friends ride bikes or take the bus everywhere, then that is what seems normal to you.
