Well right now Canada feels like it might be a better place than the US... but who knows, this is election year...

My first love: San Diego, CA! the beaches & the weather there was gorgeous. I haven't been to many other cities, but the ones I've been to that were cool & need more time to explore: Toronto, Boston, & NYC

My current love: San Francisco... where I live and am still experiencing. So much to do, lots of subcultures, lots of strange and bizarre people

Also, I've been to LA but didn't like it. Saw too many fake people there, the smog kills me, and the weather & vibe weren't my thing.

So far, I'm liking Chicago -- even if I *did* end up living here by accident.

You know, when I gave my answers, I was totally thinking "north america". But if I needed to move out of the US, I'd move to either Amsterdam, London, or (a north american city) Toronto.

i'd move back to san francisco if i could afford the horrific rent (my crappy old one-room apt. went for $650 in 1987. i called the manager recently, just to see how much a single would go for now -- and it was over $1000... the place didn't even have a/c or a real bedroom or anything special.

berkeley: if you can stand the ur-politicos, it's a cool place. nice weather. i used to go to shows there (again -- this is in the '80s); we'd get there early and hit the record stores. my friend and i were walking down the street -- both of us were wearing leather jackets and boots. no big deal, right? wrong. it's so pee cee there, people actually yell animal-rights yipyap at you the second they see anything that doesn't conform to whatever self-righteous crap they believe in... saw john waters speak at uc berkeley and couldn't walk across the campus without nutcases shoving flyers in my face, promoting their cause-of-choice. (there IS an excellent pizza-by-the-slice dive, though...)

since san francisco is a moneypit, i'm gonna go with portland (oregon). they hate californians -- a couple of people i know moved there from here, and they got a lot of negativity from the locals (who actually do use the term 'californication')... they gave me sage advice: just be cool, recycle, play along and assimilate... it'll be okay.
it's really pee cee there -- but very writer/artist-supportive. weather-wise, it's not that great. i'm dying to get away from the relentless sun and heat of socal, but p-town is hot in the summer, too, and it rains. a LOT. it's humid, too... my naturally curly hair spent its trip in a ponytail and other creative up-dos. however: if you're into books... it's heaven. sure, there's powells, but there's also this small bookstore with the coolest/sickest stuff i've seen since odium vanished (i was working for a magazine when i found this place in portland, and i asked the owner if he wanted me to write a piece on his store. he declined, with the greatest line: "i don't want the publicity. if you're meant to find us, you will."

i spent a few hundred bucks there alone -- oh, to have that kind of disposable income again -- and flew back to revolting los angeles schlepping a giant leather shoulder bag weighted down with books and magazines, praying i wouldn't have to open it and show the security guards/fellow flight members my tasteful purchases.

i fell in love with portland as soon as i got there. finding a job there is worse than finding a job in l.a., but the apartments are affordable (compared to l.a./sf)... you can take the max train for free and/or cheap -- and it's actually OKAY to take the bus; it's not like l.a., where bus riders are looked upon as lepers. i'm moving there as soon as i can. the people are totally cool and unpretentious; it's like sf was in the '80s, pre-yuppie dot bomb millionaire hell.

uh, i guess i'm supposed to INTRODUCE myself. i'm susie mid-america, i'm a writer and editor, i've worked in the porn biz for the last 13 years, i'm an aging punk rawk idiot and i share my home with my cat and my hamster. and i feel like a total douche doing the 'intro' thing, so i'm definitely finished.

Wow! I didn't know you thought so highly of me, especially to publish it in public until I started dating a military intelligence analyst who showed me everything about my past. You should still come up here and meet both of us now.

I would have to go with Vancouver (obviously), Montreal, and LA. I haven't travelled outside of Canada and the US yet so that list is a little unfair. :P

Las Vegas is my favorite. Nothing better than a 24/7/365 city. The only bad thing is the Goth Scene sucks. Clubs open and a week later close. Very few really active people here, most who do show up to clubs are wannabe's. There is no real Goth/Fetish/alternative clubs here any time.

I have never been there but if I could go to any city, I would go to London and visit Club AntiChrist... That is one awesome club.

I don't get to travel much, especially being payed an hourly wage since any trip I go on includes not only spending money, but not making any either. And in the Army they just wouldn't let me go anywhere. I love Chicago, but I grew up near it so I may be a little bias. Otherwise parts of Austin, especially around Lake Travis, are great and Boston too, even though I've only spent one night in Boston for a Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Dropkick Murphys concert. I am kind of liking Savannah, GA but the lack of an open container law allowing people to walk around downtown with a drink in their hand at night really isn't enough to put it into a favorites category.

New York for me. It's killer, lots of opportunities for bad decisions. It's really hard to pick a favorite. In Canada, Toronto has my vote.

Toronto! I feel strangely at peace among the crazies, homeless, and people in a mad rush to get no where.
Vancouver is great too but I haven't spent enough time there.

Well, sounds like you already have a feel for Vancouver then. :P
Toronto terrifies me, to be honest. It's just way too populated for me.

Ya, you don't actually want to live in Toronto. Small doses is the key. A week here and there in the city is nice, I could never live there full time as much as I love it.

Totally partial to the PNW for areas in the USA. Seattle, is my hometown but it has changed so much from when I lived there in the 80s. It's mini LA now. Always wanted to go and live in New Zealand but it takes 1,484,102 years to get approved for residency.

In no particular order... NOLA, Toronto, Detroit (aka home), Los Angeles (current location).... Loved Chicago in the mid-nineties for various reasons... Home of WaxTrax records, Sister Machine Gun, and Polish language radio. No desire to go back now...

Someone mentioned Hong Kong... I have a cousin there. He loves it and is never coming back. I guess it is THAT cool. Or maybe the Chinese have him locked in a basement somewhere pumping pro-Sino propaganda into the Internets while being force-fed Panda Express's Sweetfire Chicken and lectured on Maoist economics. One or the other.

Some new places I want to see are New Orleans and also since my best friend lives in Georgia, she said she would take me to Atlanta. I would like to see there too. Also I would like to visit both Philly and Chicago more. The last time I was there in both cities were for conventions so I didn't see much.

It's a couple of hours away, but if you end up in Atlanta, check out Savannah on a Friday or Saturday night. A lot of college people (including a major art and design college) and idiot military make for some interesting crowds. Plus like I'm pretty sure I stated before, the ability to legally walk around with a plastic cup full of whatever alcoholic beverage you like is a nice perk.

Even if you are not drinking, I always think the ability to walk around with open booze containers makes a city more fun.

I must say I am partial to the State of Maine. Same longitude as the PNW so weather is the same (good) but less people and well, the water is the Atlantic. Great forestry/misty place and less Starbucky/yuppie place.

Favorite cities ever are Sydney and Kingston, I eventually wanna move to Sydney but I have too much love for Philly. It's a great town and the fact that this is where nearly all of my friends and family are is what's keeping me here.
