US actress Rose McGowan is set to play adult movie legend Linda Lovelace in a new film.

Rose, 35, has signed up to portray Linda - who shot to fame in 1971 as the star of famous porn film 'Deep Throat' - in new biopic of her life, 'Inferno'.

A source said: "It's a very gritty role - Linda's life was far from happy."

Rose, who has previously portrayed a stripper in horror film 'Planet Terror', is said to be fascinated by Linda's tragic life.

'Inferno' will tell how the porn queen, who's real name was Linda Boreman, was forced into the sex industry by her abusive husband Chuck Traynor.

Her breakthrough film 'Deep Throat' caused a sensation upon release, and was one of the only pornographic movies ever to be shown in mainstream cinemas.

Linda eventually died penniless aged 53 in 2002 after losing control of her car and crashing.

Before her death she had been involved in drug use but had turned her life around and become an ardent feminist and anti-porn campaigner.

The role of Linda is a career coup for Rose, with both Angelina Jolie and Meg Ryan previously linked to the movie.

All I remember about Lovelace is how apparently some guy stuck a gun up to her head to have her do "Deep Throat". That's what she says...

Then I saw an article in "Hustler" magazine when I was a teenager, where there were "beastialty" shots of another porn (dog/woman) she did 2 years before "Deep Throat" and Larry Flynt asked the question, "So was this same guy on set holding the gun to her head?"

So, I figure, if this is her story, used by her own words, they'll probably be alot of embellishing on the facts.

There are so many witnesses who say that is hogwash. A lot of times, a woman who has done sex work can get more support afterward (or higher tips in the strip club) if she claims that it was awful and she never wanted to do any of those gross pervy things. Ask just about any woman who does porn specifically about her work, in her off time, and a lot of women do it for the sex. The money is a bonus. Particularly performers who do it for any extended amount of time. Because I founded Blue Blood with the quaint notion of celebrating real pairings, I actually will get models pissed off at me because I am unwilling to hire their non-real-life partner of choice to come fuck them.

Linda was anti-porn for awhile, but she eventually went and posed for a porn magazine again.

More than anything, I think Linda's life was sad. She strikes me as someone who wanted attention very badly, and she got it in porn for awhile... then when she was out of the porn spotlight, she got it by being anti-porn. I don't deny that she was abused, but I think it's very unlikely that she was forced to do porn.

I think something she said, though, sheds a lot of light on the divide between white, upper-middle-class educated feminists and other women: Linda said that the anti-pornography movement had used her, because "they" never helped her financially. It says a lot about the cultural disconnect there.
